Transylvania University will award Bachelor of Arts degrees\nto 226 seniors at its commencement on Saturday, May 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 9 a.m. ceremony in front of historic Old Morrison will include an address<\/a> by Deogratias \u201cDeo\u201d Niyizonkiza, a leading advocate for the world\u2019s most impoverished people and founder and CEO of Village Health Works in Burundi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Class of 2019\nhighlights<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Students in this year\u2019s graduating class also have distinguished themselves academically, with numerous accolades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Thirty-eight percent of the 226 graduating seniors are\nreceiving Latin honors for a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, and 47 percent are\nreceiving program honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Forty-seven percent of this year\u2019s graduates studied\nabroad<\/a> while at Transylvania\u2014either for a full term, a summer or\nduring the four-week May\nterm<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Students will pursue advanced degrees at institutions such\nUniversity College London and various medical and law schools. Other\nopportunities awaiting them after graduation include the Peace Corps, Fifth\nThird Bank\u2019s Operations Leadership Program and various other jobs\u2014from staff\naccountant to Walt Disney World cast member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Senior achievements include the IU Lilly Family School of\nPhilanthropy Fellowship, a Lexington Rotary Club Ollie and Dick Hurst Award, and\na Cralle Foundation\/Joan Cralle Day Fellowship from the University of Kentucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The student speaker at this year\u2019s commencement will be Presli Neal, a first-generation college student from Lexington. The neuroscience major has been a member of the Student Government Association, Pre-Health Club, Pre-Physician Assistant Club and STEM Empowerment Club, and she has served as membership director of her sorority, Phi Mu. She plans to attend physician assistant school and hopes to work in pediatrics or emergency medicine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commencement speaker known for humanitarian work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Deogratias \u201cDeo\u201d Niyizonkiza will deliver Transylvania’s commencement address on May 25. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Niyizonkiza\u2019s speech will cap off an academic year focused\non the theme of civility<\/a>,\nwhich is not just an abstract concept to him\u2014but a matter of life and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Burundi native fled the killing fields of his homeland\nin the early 1990s to New York, where he lived for a while in Central Park\nbefore learning English and completing undergraduate degrees in biochemistry\nand philosophy at Columbia University. He then attended Harvard to study public\nhealth and Dartmouth for medical school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niyizonkiza returned to Africa to start Village Health\nWorks, a community health center in an area with limited access to quality\nmedical care. \u201cUpon my return to Burundi, it was the sheerest form of\ncivility\u2014uniting formerly warring people to turn enemies into a new community\nof forgiveness, collaboration, healing and hope\u2014that became Village Health\nWorks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am so proud to be taking part in the graduation\nceremonies at Transylvania University, where community service is so highly\nvalued<\/a> and where students are taught to become citizens who are not\njust out to make a living, but who are living to make a difference through\ngreat ideas and actions that speak to all humanity,\u201d Niyizonkiza said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania President Seamus Carey recognizes the central\nrole of civil discourse in the educational process. \u201cAs our graduating seniors\nprepare to embark on their lives after Transylvania, they will take with them\nthe wisdom of a man who embodies the value of civility,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
