But she hoped to work for the consumer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nknew that, as a business person, I wanted to ensure that the customer was being\nrespected and represented, and that their voice was always something in the\nback of our minds,\u201d she explains. At the same time, she wanted the business to be\nsuccessful. She just wasn\u2019t sure how to \u201cencapsulate it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image1-3-810x541.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5934\" width=\"558\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/image1-3-810x541.jpeg 810w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/image1-3-350x234.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/image1-3-730x487.jpeg 730w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/image1-3-768x513.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/image1-3-1536x1025.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/image1-3-2048x1367.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/image1-3-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><figcaption>&#8220;&#8230;we\u2019re going to come at the problem from a different perspective.&#8221;\u2014Abby Cullen &#8217;19<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although anthropology might not be seen as a traditional major\nfor someone interested in business, Cullen says the discipline has helped her\ndevelop \u201cvery pertinent skillsets that apply to business fields.\u201d She has made\nconnections between the broad, structural theories she\u2019s learned in the\nclassroom and how to think about them in the context of the relationship\nbetween business and consumer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I had an a-ha\nmoment as I was signing up for classes,\u201d Cullen says, reflecting on how\npursuing her interest in anthropology made her a better business job candidate.\n\u201cIt was more just being in class and seeing how these things actually connect\npretty well. Not in the classical sense of being in a business class and\ntalking about HR and diversity, but thinking about a cost analysis and how it\nis going to affect our consumer long-term, and how is it going to affect our\nquality.\u201d Indeed, her ability to bring a new\nperspective to a business setting has helped her stand out to employers.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On campus, Cullen\u2019s combination of academic interests isn&#8217;t unusual\u2014with a major in anthropology and minors in writing, rhetoric and communication and interdisciplinary business. Nor are the many opportunities to secure internships and jobs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, having access to experiential learning is what drew\nCullen to Transylvania. She says she knew that internships would be important\nfor her career goals, so she sought a college that could provide access to\neverything that a city has to offer. As it turns out, Cullen found that\nexperiential learning was some of the most important education she received at\nTransy. It\u2019s also part of a larger process of complementary elements that\nhelped her build the skills, experiences and networking ability that were\nnecessary in securing her first job out of college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/CAPE-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5940\" width=\"262\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/CAPE-logo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/CAPE-logo-350x350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/CAPE-logo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/CAPE-logo-466x466.jpg 466w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/CAPE-logo-348x348.jpg 348w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/05\/CAPE-logo-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Cullen remembers being an \u201ceager\u201d first-year student. That means\nshe took advantage of every possibility that Transy afforded. In her first semester,\nshe enrolled in the 100 Doors to Success mentoring program, gaining the support\nand guidance of professionals, and began working with Career Development,\nembracing their adage: \u201cIf you\u2019re not networking, you\u2019re not working.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She took part in in the Tempur Sealy leadership program and, through the Transy network, was offered a job with the local accounting firm, Besten &amp; Dieruf PLLC, where she was able \u201cto take what we talked about in the classroom and see it in a real world context.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On campus, Cullen worked for First Engagements (helping first-year students get acclimated to Transy), as an admissions ambassador (learning how to present herself and the university) and for the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship (working with data and organization). She learned to be comfortable conversing with different groups of people\u2014something she took with her into job interviews and informational meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <\/p><cite>\u201cI always like to stress the internships. I\u2019ve had a lot of great opportunities just from being a Transy student.\u201d  <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>By the start of her junior year, when she applied for a 10-week internship with Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati, Cullen remembers one of the people looking at her resume and saying, &#8220;You\u2019ve done all of this in three years?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the best parts\nof going to a small school,\u201d Cullen notes. \u201cYou can take on so much.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the on-site interview with the bank, Cullen quickly emerged\nfrom the typical pool of candidates as they introduced themselves. People were\nintrigued by her background and had lots of questions, she recalls. \u201cHow does my discipline fit here? Why does my\nperspective matter?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She replied, \u201cTruthfully, that\u2019s where it starts. It is the fact that I\u2019m going to look at a situation pretty differently than you are from your operations standpoint, because we\u2019re going to come at the problem from a different perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cullen was selected and thrived during what she calls a 10-week-long\ninterview for the full-time job she was offered in the autumn of her senior\nyear. She used the time to learn from as many people within the bank as\npossible. It\u2019s an approach she plans to continue as she decides on the type of\nmaster\u2019s degree she will eventually pursue. Not content to rest on her laurels,\nshe says that graduating into a job, \u201cis pretty\ninvigorating.\u201d She wants to keep the learning and momentum going. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have learned so much in the classroom, I\u2019ve worked hard building my resume and my experiences. I\u2019ve had to earn it myself, but Transy made it easier.
