Rucker, Class of 1985, says it sums up his Transylvania experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Cole-Rucker-image-Paradigm-Malibu.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5591\" width=\"340\" height=\"255\"\/><figcaption>Rucker is revolutionizing mental health care for teens.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt Transylvania, we always had this great history to fall back on, a solid academic foundation to stand on, yet we were encouraged to be innovative, to look at things differently and to take chances,\u201d Rucker remembers. Today, he\u2019s the co-founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/paradigmmalibu.com\/\">Paradigm Malibu<\/a>, a group of residential treatment centers for adolescents and their families along the Pacific Coast Highway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than 20 years, Rucker has been pioneering and\ntransforming teen mental health care, individual by individual. He finds the\nroots for much of his thinking and methodology in his Transy experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMuch of my journey at Transy was about figuring out who I\nwas and how to live authentically,\u201d he says, something that he\u2019s found\nessential to treating teens. \u201cA lot of my views, coming from a small town in\nKentucky, were culture bound, based on my limited life experience. I learned\nhow to see things through other people\u2019s eyes and to be open and accepting of\nother people\u2019s values and traditions. That laid the ground work for me to be\nmuch more effective at working with a large cross section of people.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes Paradigm Malibu\u2019s approach so successful and\ninnovative in the industry is their treatment of adolescents as equal partners\nin the creation and implementation of their treatment plan. It\u2019s about\nempowering young people, Rucker explains. \u201cWe help young people find value in\napproaching their lives in different ways and getting different results. I like\nto believe the professors at Transy who helped shaped me would appreciate the\napproach.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developing a new approach meant going up against the system.\n\u201cPeople in the industry fought us every step of the way,\u201d Rucker remembers.
