Neal had\ndeveloped a reputation for speaking truth to power and for advocating on behalf\nof the vulnerable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He remembers being frustrated by politicians who kept prioritizing\nrecycling over neighborhood violence and prison reform. Drawing inspiration\nfrom the leadership and service of his parents and pastor, he got involved. Drawn to\nTransylvania\u2019s long history of producing political leaders, he wanted the same \u201celite\neducation,\u201d he says, that had prepared so many others before him. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As president of Transy\u2019s Black Student Alliance, Neal\u2019s goal\nis to create a lasting impact. \u201cI\u2019m trying to make BSA and my legacy at Transy\nabout leaving this a better place for future African-American students to come,\u201d\nhe says. It\u2019s a concept he\u2019s embraced from his leadership training at Transy,\nfocusing not on short-term gains, but on \u201cleading to leave a better place.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sophomore, Neal says he wants to motivate his generation\nto advocate not just through social media, but in person and by putting leather\nto the pavement\u2014just as his pastor advocated for civil rights in the 1960s and\nagain 50 years later in Frankfort, Kentucky. Standing beside his pastor in the\nstate\u2019s capital sincerely moved him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was when I really found my love for activism,\u201d he says.\n\u201cSeeing that passion still alive in a person who was active in the civil rights\nera gave me the push to want to be an activist. Seeing him do this\u2026I knew that\nI could do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By their example, his parents had already instilled in him a\nsense of working for the greater good, \u201cto be involved and serving something\nhigher than yourself,\u201d he explains. His mother would remind him that when\nmeeting his maker, he\u2019d be asked \u201cnot what you\u2019ve done for yourself, but what\nyou\u2019ve done for others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Transy\u2019s campus, the international affairs major (with a\ndouble minor in political science and Spanish) also serves as a Pioneer Pathway\nmentor and as vice president for the Interfraternal Conference. Neal says they have made all the difference between his first and second year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ordinary pressures of college life can take their toll on students. Add to that the challenges and energy expended by being a person of color\u2014whether as the lone representative in a TV studio or roomful of elected officials, or as a young black man walking across a campus\u2014and the need for support magnifies quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTransy has equipped me with the necessary tools to go out and make\neffective change in my community,\u201d Neal notes. \u201cTe\u2019Asia and Taran have done a\nlot, too. They\u2019ve reignited that spark back in me,\u201d he acknowledges, noting\nthat he\u2019s often in their offices\nrecharging his energy and motivation and gathering support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust seeing successful black people here at Transy is a\nthing that will help me in life,\u201d he explains. \u201cThat\u2019s something that we as\nblack males don\u2019t see a lot of in person.
