Deogratias \u201cDeo\u201d Niyizonkiza, a leading advocate for the\nworld\u2019s most impoverished people and founder and CEO of Village Health Works in\nBurundi, will deliver Transylvania University\u2019s commencement address on May 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niyizonkiza\u2019s speech will cap off an academic year focused\non the theme of civility, which is not just an abstract concept to him\u2014but a\nmatter of life and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year Niyizonkiza visited Transylvania for a Kenan\nconversation<\/a> with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder, whose\nbook, \u201cStrength in What Remains,\u201d tells Niyizonkiza\u2019s inspirational story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Burundi native fled the killing fields of his homeland\nin the early 1990s to New York, where he lived for a while in Central Park\nbefore learning English and completing undergraduate degrees in biochemistry\nand philosophy at Columbia University. He then attended Harvard to study public\nhealth and Dartmouth for medical school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niyizonkiza returned to Africa to start Village Health\nWorks<\/a>, a community health center in an area with limited access to\nquality medical care. \u201cUpon my return to Burundi, it was the sheerest form of\ncivility\u2014uniting formerly warring people to turn enemies into a new community\nof forgiveness, collaboration, healing and hope\u2014that became Village Health\nWorks,\u201d Niyizonkiza said. \u201cIt was the result of turning swords and guns into\nshovels and plows, where clearing land, making bricks, laying roads and\nplanting gardens became a living testament to civility and community in triumph\nover conflict and chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other guests speaking on the theme of \u201cOn Civility<\/a>\u201d\nat Transylvania this school year include author Salman Rushdie and internet\nsensation Dylan Marron, whose popular podcast features chats with people who\nhave been hostile to him online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania President Seamus Carey recognizes the central\nrole of civil discourse in the educational process. \u201cAs our graduating seniors\nprepare to embark on their lives after Transylvania, they will take with them\nthe wisdom of a man who embodies the value of civility,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are\nhonored to welcome Deo Niyizonkiza back to campus for our commencement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony will take place on Old Morrison Lawn beginning\nat 9 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am so proud to be taking part in the graduation ceremonies at Transylvania University, where community service is so highly valued and where students are taught to become citizens who are not just out to make a living, but who are living to make a difference through great ideas and actions that speak to all humanity,\u201d Niyizonkiza said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A frequent lecturer on global health, he has received numerous recognitions, including being named among the Carnegie Foundation of New York\u2019s 2016 Great Immigrants: The Pride of America. He also received the 2016 Presidential Medal: Amities des Peuples (Burundi), and the 2014 Dalai Lama\u2019s Unsung Heroes Award. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
