For the Rev. Emily Miller, a liberal arts grad who majored in philosophy and religion, community has been the foundation of her spiritual and professional life. Through community she\u2019s learned the richness of diversity, the soundness of her faith, and how family is much more than people related by blood or law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\nwould say that my first memory of God showing up in my life was through the\ncommunity at the church,\u201d she recalls of the devoted, intergenerational\ncongregation of Cooks Creek that always stood by her family. \u201cThat was a really\nstrong pull for me growing up,\u201d she says, \u201cthe connection to the community that\nsurrounds you during happy and not so happy times.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miller says she\u2019s excited to provide that\nsupport to Transy\u2019s community\u2014to be there for individuals on their spiritual journeys, but also to offer opportunities\nfor students and the institution to recognize and understand the beliefs of a\ndiverse student body. Serving young people has been Miller\u2019s calling since her senior year in\ncollege when she was invited to be part of campus ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After earning a B.A. from Bridgewater College (Virginia), she volunteered as an ecumenical Young Adult Volunteer (what she describes as a sort of religious Peace Corps) in a Methodist church in Miami. She worked on projects with Disciples of Christ in Texas, in campus ministry at the University of Louisville, and earned a Master of Divinity from the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, even serving as director of recruitment and admissions. Part of a clergy couple, she is married to a chaplain at Berea College. Together they have traveled and served in multiple ministries in the U.S. They also have a baby daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miller\nknows from her work and her personal journey how college opens young people to a\nnew world of perspectives. It challenges them academically, socially and\nspiritually. \u201cThat\u2019s the purpose,\u201d she acknowledges. \u201cIt\u2019s\nsupposed to be critical. That\u2019s why we\u2019re here\u2014to examine ourselves and belief\nsystems and to ask questions.\u201d College\nis often the first time students begin to consider their beliefs in the context\nof other values and traditions. Things that once seemed indisputable are no\nlonger without question. They need guidance and a safe space to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her initial talks with Transy students\nand administrators, she has heard a unanimous desire for a place where students\ncan go and talk\u2014\u201cwhen minds are blown\u201d\u2014she says with a smile that acknowledges\nher own experience. She\u2019s gratified to offer the support they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discoveries she made came after\nleaving her family farm in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She was introduced to ideas\nand theologies of other denominations and to the larger, more accepting world\nview of the national and international parts of her church. Conflicting\nattitudes needed to be reconciled. In doing so, her faith grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was the spiritual part of my life and my community\nthat introduced me to God being bigger socially\u2014societally\u2014than I had really\nthought of. For me it comes down to being open and affirming. The community\nintroduced me to God being bigger than a closed mind. That has been really\nexciting for me in my spiritual journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through that\ncommunity she found her belonging. \u201cIn being introduced to the much wider idea\nof the Presbyterian church,\u201d she notes, \u201cI learned that I wasn\u2019t alone. And\nthat made me want to continue to be part of something. I learned that it was\nbigger than myself. That is really important for college students as well,\u201d she\nadds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miller is\ndrawn to the \u201crelational aspect\u201d of a liberal arts education, not just the\nbroad intellectual and interdisciplinary experience, but the way in which\npeople from such different backgrounds can come together to live and learn and\nsupport each other. She\ncontinues to refer back to the lessons learned from her girlhood congregation, which\nhelped to raise her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are\npeople across theological and political lines,\u201d she notes of the church where she\nalso was ordained. \u201cThey have shown me what it\u2019s like to disagree and stay\ntogether. It\u2019s been a good model in my own life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miller, who is now part of Transy’s student life team, is eager to build awareness for all of the religions represented on campus. And she wants all of campus to know that they are welcome to stop by and talk with her. \u201cIt\u2019s important for folks to know that I\u2019m here for faculty and staff too,\u201d she notes. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
