Transylvania University and the community at large once again will be graced with the voices of the school\u2019s female a cappella group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With auditions next week, first-year student Karisma Keeton and sophomore Emily Maddix are working together to help revive the Grace Notes after a brief hiatus for the group. Both are members of the university\u2019s choirs and look forward to also having a smaller group that performs more pop-oriented music\u2014think Britney Spears as opposed to Bach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really exciting to be able to come together in a\nsmaller group,\u201d Maddix said. The format will allow students to pick fun pieces\nthey wouldn\u2019t necessarily be able to perform in a more strict choral setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the smaller size allows them to travel more easily and often, said Keeton, who also founded a female a cappella group in high school. \u201cWe were both really excited because we wanted to get this started again\u2014we think it will be a good addition to campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another perk of this \u201cPitch Perfect\u201d type of ensemble is\nthat each singer knows her voice will be heard\u2014almost like they\u2019re singing\nsolo. \u201cThat sounds a little scary at first, but it\u2019s actually really\nfulfilling,\u201d Keeton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grace Notes has performed at a variety of venues, including\nopening day at Keeneland and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services\nNaturalization Ceremony on campus. The new group may sing at the university\u2019s\nupcoming \u201cCabaret.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regan MacNay, Transy\u2019s new assistant professor of music and\ndirector of choral activities, said bringing back a \u201cbeloved vocal institution\nspeaks to the role of a new director\u2014change, but also drawing upon tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new Grace Notes members won\u2019t have to join one of the two choirs\u2014which are the Transylvania Singers women\u2019s treble group and the male and female Transylvania University Choir. \u201cThis is a chance for people who love a cappella pop to have a place to express themselves and find a musical community,\u201d MacNay said. \u201cThey just have to commit to the tradition and vision of the group and be enthusiastic performers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next up: The university may revive its male a cappella group, TBD or Formerly Known As.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
