Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the week following are going to be jammed packed with opportunities for Transy students to learn about and participate in the civil rights leader’s\u00a0legacy. These events are sponsored by the Transylvania University Project One initiative and the Office of Campus and Community Engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, Jan. 21, we are kicking the week off with the MLK Jr. walk in Lexington. Students, staff and community members are meeting in the Campus Center Gym at 9:15 a.m. and walking together as a unified campus in the city march. Student organizations are encouraged to organize themselves with banners or matching attire to show their student organization support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHuman progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.\u201d <\/p>Martin Luther King Jr.<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday, Jan 22, is our all-you-can-eat fundraiser with BSA, Delta Sigma Phi and Interfaith at 6:30 p.m. in Cowgill 101\/102. For a small donation, you can join us for dinner and an open discussion of the march on Selma and how MLK\u2019s legacy impacts Transy students today. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to Common Good,<\/em> a nonprofit that provides tutoring, mentoring and support for students and families in the Fayette County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The keynote speaker on Wednesday, Jan. 23, is the highlight of the university’s MLK celebration. Transylvania is hosting Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II at 6 p.m. in Carrick Theater. The event is open to the public. Brown is the 18th president of Kentucky State and founder of the Atwood Institute on Race, Education and the Democratic Ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thursday, Jan. 24, is your chance to share your voice with the campus at our open mic night event hosted by BSA, the Student Activities Board and SPEAKOut Spoken Word. Join the campus community in the library’s Writing Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Share your poetry, talent, thoughts and reflections of the week in your own way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The week wraps up on Saturday, Jan. 26, with a service event at the Hope Center at 4 p.m. Transy students are invited to volunteer their time to serve dinner to those in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
