When Judy Brumley graduated last May, her goal of securing a full-time\nposition didn\u2019t seem to take long at all. She was already working as a\ncopywriting intern at Cornett marketing and freelancing for Smiley Pete\nPublishing and InStyle magazine. In\nno time, she became a marketing assistant for Smiley Pete. But, as her advice\nto first-year Pioneers reveals, reaching her destination required a four-year\nroad map. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What are some of the essential experiences you had outside the classroom? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: I did three\ndifferent internships while at Transy. I worked at Tops magazine and Smiley\nPete Publishing in Lexington, and InStyle magazine in New York. Each of these\noffered invaluable hands-on experience in the workplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transy and its English department, specifically, worked to make it possible for me to get credit for two of my internships. Additionally, my adviser went above and beyond to make it possible for me to relocate to NYC for a semester and receive credit for my position at InStyle. Having the opportunity to work for these companies gave me real-world experience that has proved helpful as I\u2019ve interviewed for jobs. I have several different experiences to refer to when discussing my qualifications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: How did Transy\u2019s Center\nfor Academic and Professional Enrichment help you? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I visited the career\ndevelopment office several times as a student, beginning when I was a freshman.\nI worked with staff to strengthen my resume and discuss possible internship\nopportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a mentor through the 100 Doors to Success mentoring program. Tim Collins ’81 proved incredibly\u00a0helpful in securing my InStyle\u00a0magazine internship. Since he is based in New York I had someone helping me make\u00a0connections from both inside and\u00a0outside of Lexington. And, while I was in New York, it was nice to have a\u00a0familiar face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also\u00a0studied abroad for a month in Segovia, Spain, which was vital to wrapping up my Spanish major. I firmly believe there is\u00a0only so much you can learn in the classroom, so having the opportunity to go to Spain with\u00a0several Transy students and live with a host\u00a0family pushed me out of my comfort zone\u2014but in the best way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What\u2019s your advice for\nfirst-year students? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think the best advice I\ncan give is to make every minute of your time at Transy count. As a freshman it\nfeels like graduation is incredibly far away, but in reality these four years\nwill fly by. Take advantage of the career center and the 100 Doors to Success program\nso that entering the real world won\u2019t seem too daunting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Push yourself to try new\nthings and meet new people. If you\u2019ve ever wanted to study abroad or intern,\nnow is the time to do it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t be discouraged by\nfailures. I met with people in the career development office for so many\ndifferent cover letters and resume revisions. I applied to so many different\ninternships before I finally got my position at InStyle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Transy, the faculty and\nstaff will keep working with you whether you need help raising your grade or\ngetting a summer job. Go talk to your teachers or other staff members. Use\nyour resources because people want to help you succeed!   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
