{"id":3863,"date":"2018-11-08T10:44:19","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T15:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/?p=3863"},"modified":"2021-02-10T12:57:49","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T17:57:49","slug":"honoring-those-who-contributed-to-freedoms-cause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/2018\/11\/honoring-those-who-contributed-to-freedoms-cause\/","title":{"rendered":"Honoring those who &#8216;contributed &#8230; to freedom&#8217;s cause&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transylvania students answered the call to duty during World War I&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2513.jpg\" alt=\"Transylvania University's Student Army Training Corps\" class=\"wp-image-3864\" width=\"1325\" height=\"971\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-four\ndays after the United States entered World War I in April 1917, Robert\nMcLachlan, class of 1919 and a native of Dry Ridge in Grant County, enlisted in\nthe U.S Army. He was one of 27 students who left the classrooms of Transylvania\nfor the battlefields of Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McLachlan served as a corporal in Company F of the 16th Infantry Division. After enlisting at Fort Thomas, Kentucky, he \u201cleft the United States June 6th as Pershing\u2019s Standard Bearer,\u201d according to the Crimson yearbook from 1919.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He never\nreturned to the U.S., to Kentucky or Transylvania. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert McLachlan was killed in action July 19, 1918. He i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abmc.gov\/decedent-search\/mclachlan%3Drobert\">s memorialized at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery<\/a>&#8216;s Tablets of the Missing in Belleau, France. On this Veterans Day 2018, 100 years after the armistice that ended World War I, we honor his service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the world\nlooks back this Veterans Day on the centennial of the Nov. 11 armistice, we\nreflect on the service of those called to duty. The 1919 Crimson yearbook\ndetails those Pioneers who served:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo the World\nWar Transylvania gave one Major General, one Brigadier General, three\nLieutenant Colonels, eight Majors, Nineteen Captains, thirty-six Lieutenants,\nand two hundred and ninety-one non-commissioned officers and privates.\nTransylvania\u2019s Student Army Training Corps contained eighty-five men. Five red\nstars are on Transylvania\u2019s service flag for her five young women who went into\nthe service as nurses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2516.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3865\" width=\"408\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/11\/DSC_2516.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/11\/DSC_2516-350x287.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/11\/DSC_2516-730x599.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/11\/DSC_2516-768x630.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/11\/DSC_2516-810x665.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/11\/DSC_2516-300x246.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><figcaption>A photo taken following the induction ceremony for the Transylvania Student Army Training Corps on Oct. 1, 1918.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While 32 students left Transy to join the war efforts, the Student Army Training Corps was organized on campus \u201cfor the purpose of supplying the American Army with educated and trained men for officers,\u201d the Crimson staff wrote. On October 1, 1918, 85 students were voluntarily inducted into service. One of the campus buildings, Ewing Hall, was converted into an Army barracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even an\nunfortunate breakout of the flu, which closed the college, provided an\nopportunity for the corps. \u201cHikes, drill, inspections, signaling, athletic\npastimes, bayonet work and fatigue duty took up most of the day.\u201d When uniforms\nand rifles for the corps members were delayed, they took time to organize a\nband, \u201cand the Star Spangled Banner was played every afternoon at retreat.\u201d\nAccording to one report, the Transylvania group was the \u201cbest drilled unit\u201d in\na three-state territory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less than six weeks after the unit stood up, the armistice was signed.
