Transylvania University pre-health<\/a>\nstudents ventured beyond their classrooms and labs this week to learn about\nreal-world opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activities included outings on Tuesday to Mission Lexington<\/a>\u2014a downtown clinic\nthat provides free medical, dental, vision and pharmacy services\u2014and the 2nd Chance Clinic<\/a>, which treats\nopiate addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel Cooper, a senior pre-med student majoring in\nbiochemistry, said it\u2019s valuable to get out into the community, especially for\naspiring physicians, dentists and optometrists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the tour of Mission Lexington, students learned about\nthe diverse population that uses the clinic and the volunteer and career\nopportunities to serve them. \u201cI was surprised by the need for Spanish speaking\nindividuals, such as medical translators,\u201d Cooper said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning about the community\u2019s needs, after all, is vital\nfor those going into professions that care for people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robin Prichard, coordinator of pre-health preparation programs,\nsaid, \u201cWe hope to connect Transy students to the community and give them\nopportunities to serve in the pre-health field. Many of them need volunteer\nhours and shadowing experience to apply to medical and graduate programs.\u201d The\ntour already has resulted in at least one student signing up to volunteer at\nthe Mission Lexington Dental Clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pre-Health Week also included Monday\u2019s Health Professions\nFair, where 80 students made connections with representatives from professional\nand graduate schools. Other events include Wednesday\u2019s panel discussion with\nalumni in the medical field followed by a reception for participants to further\nconnect with one another. Additionally, students on Friday will tour Transy\u2019s\nMonroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum, which gained national attention\nlast year when Ozzy Osbourne featured it on \u201cOzzy & Jack\u2019s World Detour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTransy has such a large population of pre-health students\nthat we decided to have a week that would be full of resources for them,\u201d\nPrichard said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
