With a name like Battle on Broadway, you\u2019d expect a clash of fierce rivals when Transylvania tips off against the University of Kentucky on Friday in Rupp Arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transy is no Duke in the eyes of UK, though. And there are a\nlot of Wildcat fans at Transy. Underscoring the friendly nature of this\nexhibition game, the Transylvania University Choir will stand side by side with\nthe UK Blue Note a cappella group\u2014each wearing their own school colors\u2014to sing\nthe national anthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to stand mixed as one choir, so it will look\nlike two groups have come together,\u201d said Blue Note vocal coach Holly Bennett.\n\u201cWe\u2019re all very excited.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the center of this crimson and blue blend is Regan MacNay, Transy’s new assistant professor of music and director of choral activities. She recently earned her doctorate from UK, and her name came up when Transylvania President Seamus Carey was having dinner with UK Director of Opera Everett McCorvey, MacNay said. That conversation led to Friday night\u2019s collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a blessing to have Dr. MacNay here,\u201d Bennett\nsaid. \u201cTo come straight from UK, it opens up so many new doors of\ncommunication. That\u2019s really exciting for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bennett on Wednesday visited Transylvania for a rehearsal and to tell them what to expect at Rupp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacNay described the students’ reaction when she first told them they\u2019d be singing at center court in that storied arena: \u201cMy choir just levitated out of their seats, they were so excited to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019ll sing an a cappella version of the “Star-Spangled Banner” in a jazz style. \u201cIt\u2019s a challenging piece,\u201d MacNay said. \u201cIt’s really cool. It\u2019s going to bring Rupp to its feet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s a pretty impressive accomplishment for a group who,\nother than two singers on the cheer and dance team, aren\u2019t necessarily\nathletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania senior Michael Maggard, who once sang with a\nstatewide choral group at a Wildcat football game, is looking forward to\nFriday\u2019s performance. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty exciting,\u201d he said. \u201cYou get to see them on\nTV, but to actually be there on the floor and to get to perform in front of\nsuch a large crowd is such an awesome opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior Rachel Stone feels the same way. \u201cIt\u2019ll be really\ncool to be in Rupp Arena,\u201d she said. \u201cI know a lot of people from Transy are\nplanning on going, so hopefully our student section will be really full, and\nit\u2019ll be exciting to be cheering on our team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, Stone appreciates getting to work with Blue Note. \u201cWe\u2019ve never actually been able to sing with UK,\u201d she said. \u201cWe get to do a lot of stuff together with them academically\u2014whether it\u2019s labs, the library, that kind of stuff\u2014I think it\u2019s cool that we\u2019re going to be doing this together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
