LEXINGTON, Ky. \u2013 Beginning in 2019,\ngraduates of the Academy of Information Technology at Bryan Station High School\nwill be eligible to receive a minimum $18,000 scholarship to attend\nTransylvania University. The newly announced partnership not only recognizes\nthe achievements of academy graduates, but also provides them with a path to\nfurther their education at one of the nation\u2019s top liberal arts colleges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The work Bryan Station and\nits academies are doing to empower individuals to become globally-minded\ncitizens goes hand-in-hand with our mission at Transylvania,\u201d said President\nSeamus Carey. \u201cWe want students from throughout our community to know they can\nafford a top-level liberal arts education right here in Lexington, and we\u2019re\ntaking the steps to help make that happen for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith this commitment, Transylvania\nUniversity is taking community partnership to the next level,\u201d said Fayette County\nPublic Schools Superintendent Manny Caulk. \u201cThe Fayette County Public Schools\nPortrait of a Graduate is our promise to families that when you choose our\nschools, you are choosing an experience for your child designed to equip them\nto excel in whatever future they can imagine for themselves. This significant\nscholarship opportunity expands the world of possibilities for the graduates of\nBryan Station High School.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginning this year, students who\ngraduate from Bryan Station\u2019s Academy of Information Technology, apply to\nTransylvania by Feb. 1 of their senior year, and are admitted will receive a\nminimum renewable scholarship of $18,000 per year. Eligible high school students\nwill be academically and career ready by having passed specific IT Academy\nclasses, met industry certification or taken dual-credit classes to meet academy\nstandards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis\nopportunity is about removing barriers for our students and allowing them to\ngain access to a top notch liberal arts post-secondary education,\u201d said former\nIT Academy Principal Carl Hayden. \u201cWe appreciate that through our long standing\npartnership with Transylvania University, they recognize that the IT Academy is\npreparing graduates that are talented, engaged, and prepared to meet the needs\nof the 21st century global society.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Academy of Information\nTechnology is the longest established career academy at Bryan Station and is a\nNAF certified academy. Graduates have gained valuable skills through project\nand work-based learning experiences in the classroom and through job shadowing,\ninternships, guest speakers, field trips, mentors and special student-led\ncommunity projects. The major pathways offered in the IT Academy are computer\nprogramming, video and cinematography, and graphic design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Academy graduates may choose any of\nTransylvania\u2019s 46 majors, but they can also continue studies in the field\nthrough the university\u2019s Computer Science program and its new Digital Liberal\nArts initiative. Launched in 2017 to teach students how digital technologies\naffect the world of today and tomorrow, students use technology to enhance\nlearning, research and art. The initiative\u2019s goal is to support a student\u2019s\nacademic experience with tools and spaces dedicated to cutting-edge digital\ntechnologies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bryan Station students who apply to and are accepted to attend Transylvania are also eligible for a number of additional merit-based scholarships<\/a> and financial aid opportunities<\/a>. The average financial aid package for incoming Transylvania students is approximately $27,000 a year, making the actual costs of college more affordable. Students attending Transylvania are also more likely to graduate in four years when compared to other Kentucky colleges \u2013 almost 70 percent of Transy\u2019s first-year students graduate in four years, as opposed to an average of 19.6 percent at public universities and 34.2 percent at the other private institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
