James Mustich, a veteran bookseller and author of \u201c1,000 Books to Read Before You Die: A Life-Changing List,\u201d will visit Transylvania University on Thursday, Oct. 18, for a free, public conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His compendium<\/a>\nof noteworthy books was more than 14 years in the making and includes a diverse\nselection\u2014from classic novels to memoirs to children\u2019s books. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mustich\u2019s talk, which is part of Transylvania\u2019s Creative Intelligence Series<\/a> and the New Frontiers<\/a> season, will be at 4:30 p.m. in Carrick Theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJames\nMustich\u2019s work is a unique achievement,\u201d Transylvania President Seamus Carey\nsaid. \u201cHis book is a model of the highest erudition and reminds us of the vast\nresources we have for elevating human awareness, discourse and\nunderstanding.\u00a0 It is a call back to the art and act of reading and to the\ncultivation of ever deeper and broader contexts for living.\u00a0 In the age of\nsocial media, which strips so much context away, and with it, the social mores\nof civil society, Mustich’s work could not be more timely.\u00a0 We are honored\nto welcome this remarkable thinker to campus, and we look forward to an\nengaging conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Providing more than 900 pages on notable books, Mustich\u2019s\nliterary guide is the fifth installment of the \u201c1,000\u2026Before You Die\u201d series,\nwhich has more than 4.4 million copies in print. Brief, compelling essays\naccompany each title, providing context for the work and the reason it was\nincluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe list is not, as Mustich insists in his introduction, a\ncanon or a prescriptive list. Rather, it’s an invitation to explore,\u201d according\nto the publisher. \u201cIt\u2019s like walking into a dream bookstore where every title\nis intriguing and rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mustich, who lives in Connecticut, started off at an\nindependent New York bookstore in the early 1980s. He went on to co-found the\nrenowned book catalog, \u201cA Common Reader,\u201d and work in the publishing industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While his background as a bookseller gave him valuable\nexperience recommending books to others, compiling this list of 1,000 books was\nno easy task. \u201cReaders read in so many different ways that any one standard of\nmeasure is inadequate,\u201d Mustich said. \u201cKeeping such diversity of appetite in\nmind, and hoping to have something to satisfy every kind of reading yen, I\nwanted to make \u20181,000 Books to Read Before You Die\u2019 expansive in its tastes,\nencompassing revered classics and commercial favorites, flights of escapist\nentertainment and enlightening works of erudition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He asked himself: \u201cWhat if I had a bookstore that could hold\nonly 1,000 volumes and I wanted to ensure it held not only books for all time\nbut also books for the moment, books to be savored over several months or\ndevoured in a night? A shop where any reading inclination\u2014be it for thrillers\nor theology, or theological thrillers\u2014might find reward? In the end, I was back\nin my favorite haunt, a browser\u2019s version of paradise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
