Internet sensation Dylan Marron will kick off Transylvania\nUniversity\u2019s Creative Intelligence Series 2018-19 on Monday, Oct. 8, by\ndiscussing his take on civility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marron\u2014whose popular \u201cConversations with People Who Hate Me\u201d podcast features chats with people who have been hostile to him online\u2014will give a free, public lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Carrick Theater. The event will include a question-and-answer session and a meet-and-greet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His desire to engage those with differing opinions ties into\nthe theme of Transylvania\u2019s academic year: civility<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur opening speaker often discovers a rich, shared humanity\nthat leaves no room for hate\u2014even where this is disagreement,\u201d said Zo\u00e9\nStrecker, an art professor and director of Creative Intelligence and special\nacademic programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marron<\/a> also is a writer and video\nmaker who focuses on social justice issues and often draws online hostility\ntowards his work. But during \u201cConversations with People Who Hate Me,\u201d he\nengages those who disagree with him in a lively and humorous manner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The podcast has been downloaded 2 million times and was\nfeatured in a The New York Times Magazine profile: \u201cDylan\nMarron Wants to Know Why People Hate One Another<\/a>.\u201d FastCompany\ncalled the show \u201cthe timeliest podcast of 2017,\u201d and The Guardian and USA Today\nchose it for their “podcast pick.\u201d Additionally, BuzzFeed said the show is\nthis year\u2019s must-listen podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marron also is the voice of Carlos on the \u201cWelcome to\nNightvale\u201d podcast and creator of Tumblr\u2019s Most Viral Blog of 2016, \u201cEvery\nSingle Word.\u201d He gave a TED\ntalk<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marron\u2019s lecture at Transylvania is the first presentation\nthis academic year in the university\u2019s Creative\nIntelligence Series<\/a>. Season highlights include an Oct. 9 choral\ndrama by Grammy award-winning Conspirare, \u201cConsidering Matthew Shepard\u201d; and\nthe March 27 Kenan Lecture, \u201cSalman Rushdie, On Civility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
