Over nearly two and a half centuries, the university has educated generations of students, helped shape the history of higher education in the West, and collected more than its share of wonderful stories along the way.

That’s part of what makes being a Pioneer feel different. The name connects today’s students to the people, ideas, discoveries and traditions that came before them. But a history this long isn’t just something to look back on. It’s something each new generation gets to add to.

Before Old Morrison, there was a log cabin

It is hard to imagine Transy without Old Morrison. The stately limestone building has become one of Lexington’s most recognizable landmarks, and its steps are the backdrop for class photos, celebrations, campus gatherings and countless family pictures.

But Old Morrison wasn’t where the story began.

Transylvania Seminary was established in 1780 by an act of the Virginia assembly, with support from Governor Thomas Jefferson. The first classes weren’t held until 1785, in a log cabin near Danville, Kentucky, belonging to the Rev. David Rice, the first chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees.

Five years after its founding, Transylvania was still a modest educational venture on the early American frontier. There was no iconic building, no familiar campus skyline and certainly no PumpkinMania lighting up Old Morrison each fall. There was an idea: higher education could take root in a place where educational opportunities were still limited.

In 1793, the university’s trustees accepted land in Lexington, now known as Gratz Park, in exchange for moving the school to the city and maintaining its campus there. By 1799, Transylvania had become a university, with law and medical schools that helped establish Lexington as a center of education and professional training in the West.

It’s a remarkable beginning, especially when you consider how much of the university’s identity still revolves around the same simple idea: a place where people come to learn, ask questions and prepare for what comes next.

You can read more about those early years in Transylvania’s official history.

Old Morrison has seen a few things

If the walls of Old Morrison could talk, they would have quite a bit to say.

Construction of the building was completed in 1833, replacing an earlier campus building destroyed by fire. Henry Clay, the famous Kentucky statesman, presidential candidate and former Transylvania law professor, helped oversee its construction.

Old Morrison has been part of campus life ever since, although campus life has looked very different from one generation to the next.

During the Civil War, instruction at Transylvania was interrupted, and Old Morrison and the medical building were converted into makeshift hospitals for Union troops. The building that now welcomes prospective students, hosts campus gatherings and stands at the center of so many university photographs once served a very different purpose.

That contrast is one of the things we love about the history of a place like Transy. The same steps can hold generations of class pictures. The same building can witness periods of uncertainty, change and renewal. People arrive with their own hopes and worries, and the university continues around them.

Today, Old Morrison is still very much part of the everyday Transy experience. It’s a familiar landmark for students heading to class, a gathering place for celebrations and the star of PumpkinMania, a tradition that has become so beloved that some alumni now return to campus with children of their own.

History has a way of meeting the present in unexpected places.

For more, explore the 1780 blog’s look at Old Morrison and Lexington in 1851.

Meet the professor who inspired our bat mascot

Every university has a mascot. Not every university has one with a story involving a celebrated naturalist, a candlelit room, a swarm of bats and a ruined violin.

Transylvania’s mascot, Raf, takes his name from Constantine Samuel Rafinesque, a professor of botany and natural science who arrived at the university in 1819.

Rafinesque was an extraordinary character. During his years at Transy, from 1819 to 1826, he published scientific names for thousands of plants and hundreds of animals. He studied Kentucky’s prehistoric archaeological sites, identified hundreds of specimens and brought an unusual approach to teaching. Rather than relying only on books, he examined physical specimens with his students.

He also had a reputation for clashing with colleagues. By the time he left Transylvania, his relationship with the university had deteriorated considerably.

And then there’s the violin.

According to the story preserved in Transy’s archives, the naturalist John James Audubon described a night when bats entered a cottage where Rafinesque was staying. Rafinesque, apparently convinced he had encountered something scientifically extraordinary, attacked the bats with Audubon’s violin, destroying the instrument in the process.

It’s difficult to imagine a more memorable way to become part of university lore.

The story is a good one, but Rafinesque’s scientific contributions deserve their own recognition, too. In 1924, friends of the university brought the remains believed to be his back from Philadelphia, where he had died in 1840, and reinterred them beneath the steps of Old Morrison. The tomb slab bears an inscription that feels particularly fitting for a university that continues to rediscover its own history: “Honor to whom honor is overdue.”

Today, Rafinesque’s legacy lives on in Raf, Transy’s big-eared bat mascot, and in the annual Raf Week celebrations that bring a little historical eccentricity to campus each fall.

It’s a very Transy sort of story: a little unusual, intellectually curious and impossible to forget.

Read the full story in the 1780 blog: “Honor to whom honor is overdue”: Transylvania remembers noted professor Constantine Rafinesque.

A tree, a tradition and generations of Transylvanians

Not every piece of university history involves a famous politician or a landmark building. Sometimes, it’s a tree.

For generations, a large white ash outside Transylvania’s library was known as the Kissing Tree. According to alumni memories preserved in the 1780 archives, the tree was a place where students could steal a kiss without attracting the same disapproval they might have faced elsewhere on campus.

In a time when public displays of affection were frowned upon, the tree apparently offered a little privacy in plain sight. Alumni remember the custom as an unofficial rite of passage, one of those traditions passed from older students to younger ones until it became part of the shared experience of being at Transy.

It’s a charming story, but it’s also a reminder that the life of a university is about much more than what happens in classrooms.

It’s the places where friends gather between classes. It’s the stories students tell one another. It’s the rituals that make a campus feel familiar, even to someone who arrived just a few weeks earlier.

Some traditions change. Some disappear. Others are remembered long after the students who began them have graduated, moved away and started families of their own.

That’s the wonderful thing about campus traditions: They belong to the people who make them, and they take on new meaning with every generation.

You can read more in “History of Transylvania’s Kissing Tree: Not your typical sappy Valentine’s story.”

Pioneers have always found new ground to explore

The word pioneer can bring to mind people heading into unfamiliar territory. At Transylvania, that idea has taken many forms over the years.

In its early days, the university helped make professional education more accessible in the West. Its medical school trained 4,385 students before closing in 1859, and its law department became one of the nation’s distinguished programs. The university helped make Lexington a destination for people who wanted to study, teach and contribute to fields that were still developing in the young United States.

Transylvania also has a place in Kentucky sports history. In 1880, when the university was operating under the name Kentucky University, its students faced Centre College in a football game that the university’s archives identify as the first recorded intercollegiate football game in the South. Transy won, 13.75 to 0 — a score that might require a little explaining to anyone accustomed to today’s football.

The university later reclaimed its historic name in 1908.

These stories aren’t just a collection of interesting firsts. They show an institution continually adapting to the world around it: developing new areas of study, building connections with its community and opening doors to new generations of students.

That history includes important milestones in access to education, too. Transylvania welcomed its first 26 female students in 1889, and Lula B. Morton (now Drewes) became the first African American student to enroll in the regular bachelor’s degree program in 1963. She graduated in 1967.

A history nearly 250 years long isn’t a single story of progress, and it shouldn’t be treated as one. There are chapters that deserve celebration and others that call for reflection. Former President Seamus Carey explored some of those complexities in his essay, “Transylvania University Learns from Alumni on Both Sides of History.”

Being a Pioneer means being part of a history worth understanding in its entirety: the achievements, the missteps, the changes and the work that remains.

The story didn’t end with the people who came before us

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited Transylvania for the university’s 175th-anniversary celebration and the dedication of the Frances Carrick Thomas Library. His visit was another reminder that a small university in Lexington had developed connections and a reputation that reached well beyond Kentucky.

But the history of Transylvania has never belonged only to presidents, professors, famous alumni or people whose names appear on buildings.

It’s also the history of students finding their footing, discovering an unexpected interest, building friendships and figuring out what they want to do with their lives. It’s the faculty members who take a student’s question seriously. It’s the alumni who return for a game, a reunion or PumpkinMania, sometimes introducing their own children to the place where their story began.

It’s the student who arrives thinking they know exactly what the next four years will look like and discovers a new direction. It’s the graduate who looks back and realizes that a conversation, a class or a person they met here changed the way they saw the world.

Those moments may not all make it into an official timeline. They are still part of Transy’s story.

And that’s what makes the name Pioneers feel less like a label and more like an invitation.

You don’t have to discover a new species, build a landmark or leave your name in a history book to be part of what comes next. You simply have to bring your curiosity, your ideas and your willingness to grow.

Transylvania began with a small school in a log cabin. It grew into a university with a remarkable history, a distinctive campus and a community that has connected generations of students and alumni.

The next chapter is being written now.

Maybe you’ll be part of it.

Curious about Transylvania’s history? Explore more stories in the 1780 blog or plan a visit to campus.
