There are deadlines to track, campuses to visit and financial decisions that very much involve the whole family. But the person who will actually live in the residence hall, sit in the classes and build a life on that campus is your student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finding the balance between helping and taking over isn&#8217;t always easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if your family is in the thick of a college search this September, you may already know that the process doesn&#8217;t unfold quite as neatly as the admissions timelines suggest. A student who enthusiastically discusses college on Monday may have no interest in talking about it on Tuesday. A school that seemed perfect online may feel completely wrong in person. Another that wasn&#8217;t high on the original list may surprise everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s part of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your job doesn&#8217;t have to be finding the perfect college for your student. It can be helping them figure out what they need from the place they eventually choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-pay-attention-to-who-will-know-your-student\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pay attention to who will know your student<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">College websites give families an enormous amount of information to compare. Majors. Cost. Housing. Dining. Clubs. Career outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing that&#8217;s harder to quantify is whether your student will be known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s something worth watching for on a campus visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Transylvania University, the average class has 15 students and the student-to-faculty ratio is 11:1. Those numbers tell you something about size, but the real value shows up in the relationships they make possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students talk with their professors. Faculty members become advisers and mentors. They can recognize a student&#8217;s strengths, know when they&#8217;re struggling and point them toward opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For parents, that can be an important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going to college is supposed to involve independence. You won&#8217;t know whether your student made it to every class, ate lunch or remembered the umbrella you told them to take. That&#8217;s as it should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But independence doesn&#8217;t have to mean anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A smaller academic community can give students room to become more self-reliant while still being surrounded by people who know who they are and care about their progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-think-about-the-life-they-ll-build-there-not-just-the-education-they-ll-receive\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Think about the life they&#8217;ll build there, not just the education they&#8217;ll receive<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Academics should be central to a college decision, but students don&#8217;t experience college one course catalog entry at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They live there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They make friends. Find routines. Join things. Try things. Occasionally call home for reasons that begin with, \u201cDon&#8217;t freak out, but &#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The environment surrounding the college becomes part of that education too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transylvania&#8217;s location gives students a combination that isn&#8217;t especially common among small liberal arts colleges: a close-knit residential campus in downtown Lexington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students can choose from more than 60 organizations on campus, participate in NCAA Division III athletics, get involved in fraternity and sorority life and take part in traditions that have become distinctly Transy. At the same time, they have a city around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lexington provides restaurants, arts and entertainment, but it also provides something that becomes increasingly important as students move through college: access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses, healthcare organizations, nonprofits, schools and community organizations are nearby. Students can volunteer, intern, work and make professional connections without waiting for a summer in another city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you&#8217;re visiting colleges as a family, it helps to widen the lens a little. Look at the campus, then look at what&#8217;s around it. You&#8217;re getting a preview of the world your student will learn to navigate without you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-give-them-some-room-to-change-the-plan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Give them some room to change the plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents can understandably feel relieved when a high school senior knows exactly what they want to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One less uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they get to college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A class is more interesting than expected. A professor introduces an idea they&#8217;d never encountered. An internship changes their mind about a career. The major they were certain about at 18 doesn&#8217;t fit quite as well at 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s not necessarily a detour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">College should leave room for that kind of discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Transy, students have 45+ majors to explore along with minors, preprofessional programs and the option to design their own major. Employers will change. Technology will change. Entire industries will change over the course of today&#8217;s students&#8217; careers. The ability to write clearly, communicate, think critically, work across disciplines and learn something new isn&#8217;t separate from career preparation. It&#8217;s part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then students need opportunities to put those abilities to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transylvania&#8217;s Real-World Guarantee ensures every student has the opportunity to complete a high-impact learning experience through an internship, study abroad or alumni mentoring. Students can begin connecting what they&#8217;re learning to the world beyond campus before graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outcome is measurable: 95% of Transy graduates are employed or in graduate school within six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-have-the-money-conversation-early-and-use-the-right-numbers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Have the money conversation early and use the right numbers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">College is also a financial decision, and families are better served by talking about that openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the easiest mistakes to make during a college search is comparing schools based on published tuition. That can be particularly misleading when you&#8217;re comparing private and public colleges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better number is net price: what your family is likely to pay after scholarships and financial aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Transylvania, 99% of students receive financial aid and the average aid package is more than $40,000. Automatic academic merit scholarships currently range from $25,000 to $34,000 per year, with additional competitive scholarships available, including awards that can cover full tuition or the full cost of attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/app.meadowfi.com\/transy\">The Net Price Calculator<\/a> is a much better starting point than the sticker price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families of current high school seniors should also know about an incentive that&#8217;s especially relevant this fall. Students who complete an official Transylvania campus visit by Dec. 1, 2026, and are admitted for fall 2027 receive a renewable $1,000 Campus Visit Scholarship, totaling $4,000 over four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s worth putting on the family calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-on-the-drive-home-resist-the-urge-to-conduct-the-interview\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On the drive home, resist the urge to conduct the interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a college tour, parents tend to have thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lots of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You noticed the professor who stopped to talk with the tour group. You have questions about financial aid. You liked the residence hall more than you expected. You&#8217;ve already mentally calculated the drive on move-in day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your student may be thinking about something completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give them a little time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then ask what they noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might hear about the class they could picture themselves taking or the tour guide who seemed genuinely happy. Maybe they liked being able to walk downtown. Maybe the campus felt too small. Maybe they can&#8217;t explain exactly why, but they felt comfortable there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are plenty of practical questions families should ask when choosing a college: Can we afford it? Does it offer strong academics? Will my student have opportunities for internships and career preparation? What kind of support is available? What do graduates do next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those answers matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But after you&#8217;ve done the research and run the numbers, there&#8217;s still a young person who has to decide whether they can imagine making a life there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helping them recognize that feeling \u2014 while making sure they have the information to make a smart decision \u2014 may be one of the most useful things you can do during the college search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if Transylvania is on your family&#8217;s list, come see it together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take the tour.
