Transylvania University accounting students will provide free income tax preparation and e-filing services next month for local community members earning $62,000 or less annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in its 46th year, the school\u2019s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program<\/a> will be offered every Monday in February from 3-5:30 p.m. in Cowgill Center, Room 101. Sign up here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service gives students hands-on experience while helping taxpayers navigate a process many find daunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTaxes are obviously a very intimidating, overwhelming process,\u201d said Christi Hayne \u201803, professor of accounting. \u201cSo our goal is to ease that burden for the taxpayers \u2014 and hopefully find them some funds that they didn\u2019t know were available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McLain Murphy, a 2025 accounting graduate, called the program a valuable bridge between classroom learning and real-world application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt just allows us to take everything that we\u2019ve learned in the classroom and not only help the community, but put those skills to life in real-life situations,\u201d Murphy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
