You\u2019re excited. You\u2019re exhausted. And if we\u2019re honest, you might be a little unsure about what your role should look like right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth? You\u2019ve already done most of the heavy lifting. But there are a few simple, powerful ways to keep supporting your student through the next few months \u2014 ways that build trust, keep communication open and make this next step feel a little lighter for both of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-listen-first-even-when-you-re-dying-to-advise\"><strong>Listen first \u2014 even when you\u2019re dying to advise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s natural to want to help. You\u2019ve been guiding your student their whole life. But right now, listening may be the most powerful thing you can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask open-ended questions instead of giving instant opinions. Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWhat\u2019s exciting you about this school?\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat are you worried about?\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat feels like the right fit to you?\u201d<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you create space for reflection, your student\u2019s confidence grows \u2014 and so does your connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe best thing my parents did was listen,\u201d says Transy junior Myah Becker. \u201cThey let me figure out what I wanted \u2014 and I ended up exactly where I was supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-focus-on-fit-not-pressure\"><strong>Focus on fit, not pressure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every college looks great on paper. What matters most is how your student feels in that space \u2014 whether it\u2019s a place that will challenge, support and inspire them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage them to think beyond prestige and cost and instead picture their daily life: the classes, the campus, the community. Can they imagine themselves walking across that back circle? Sitting in that classroom? Finding friends who make them laugh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fit-isn-t-a-formula-it-s-a-feeling\"><strong>Fit isn\u2019t a formula \u2014 it\u2019s a feeling.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-visit-together-even-if-it-s-cold\"><strong>Visit together (even if it\u2019s cold)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>December visits can be surprisingly wonderful. The campus is calmer, finals are approaching and what you\u2019ll see is real \u2014 students studying, collaborating and grabbing coffee between classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Join a tour, meet an admissions counselor or just wander through downtown Lexington after your visit. The energy is cozy and you\u2019ll see firsthand what your student\u2019s life could look like here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If travel isn\u2019t in the cards, a virtual visit via the <a href=\"https:\/\/apply.transy.edu\/portal\/visit-options\">website and a selection of videos<\/a> can still give you a sense of the rhythm and spirit of campus. The key is to experience it together so you can talk about it later with shared perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-talk-about-finances-honestly-and-early\"><strong>4. Talk about finances \u2014 honestly and early<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Money conversations can feel uncomfortable, but they\u2019re also empowering. Be transparent about your family\u2019s budget and expectations, and remind your student that financial fit is part of college fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage them to take ownership of the process \u2014 explore scholarship options, learn about work-study programs, ask financial aid questions directly. These are skills that build independence and confidence long before move-in day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-stay-calm-when-the-emails-start-rolling-in\"><strong>5. Stay calm when the emails start rolling in<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When decisions and scholarships begin arriving, it\u2019s easy for emotions to take over \u2014 excitement, disappointment, anxiety. Remember that your student takes their cues from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrate the wins, acknowledge the setbacks and keep everything in perspective. This process isn\u2019t about validation \u2014 it\u2019s about finding the environment where your student can thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen parents stay calm, students stay grounded,\u201d says Transy assistant director of admissions, Anna Lowe . \u201cThe best thing you can say is, \u2018I\u2019m proud of you, no matter what.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-keep-the-big-picture-in-mind\"><strong>6. Keep the big picture in mind<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>College is more than a choice \u2014 it\u2019s a transition into adulthood. Over the next few months, your student will be learning how to make big decisions, advocate for themselves and imagine a future beyond high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what this whole process is about. You\u2019re not just helping them choose a college. You\u2019re helping them grow into the person who can succeed there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So take a deep breath. Trust the foundation you\u2019ve built.
