But she did know one thing: She wanted to make an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, she\u2019s doing just that as the marketing and communications manager for Lexington Habitat for Humanity, a role she said was shaped in part by a pivotal class at Transy that combined creativity, community engagement and real-world experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat class gave me hands-on opportunities to work with real organizations in Lexington,\u201d Daley said. \u201cI got to see the inner workings of nonprofits, learn from guest speakers and create multimedia projects that mirrored the work I do now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daley, a Louisville native, chose Transy in part because of its location \u2014 close enough to visit home but far enough to feel independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLexington felt like the perfect distance from home \u2014 close enough to see my family when needed, but far enough to feel like I was striking out on my own,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a campus tour and classroom visit, she knew she had found the right place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember joining one of Dr. Todorova\u2019s poetry classes as a prospective student and feeling enamored by the way the desks were arranged in a circle,\u201d she said. \u201cStudents led the discussion, and everyone seemed engaged. I craved that kind of environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Daley did not study business at Transy, soon after graduating she was able to secure positions in demanding professional environments, such as a marketing role at a law firm. She attributes her adaptability to her liberal arts education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t have a background in law, but thanks to my education, I could apply critical thinking and communication skills in a totally new field,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That adaptability, Daley said, has been vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Transylvania Alumna Laura Daley discusses how real world experiences shaped her career\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U2IEb_vjwTo?feature=oembed&rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing nimble and able to pivot is everything,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd a liberal arts education makes you stronger for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although she grew up in a larger city, Daley found Lexington\u2019s size to be a benefit, especially in terms of networking and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLouisville is much larger than Lexington, which has its pros and cons,\u201d she said. \u201cBut Lexington felt more connected to the rest of Kentucky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She discovered that Lexington\u2019s nonprofit scene, in particular, offered a unique balance between opportunity and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that Transy being located in Lexington offers a really unique blend of a city that has a lot of opportunities, but also a community where everyone kind of knows each other,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you&#8217;re involved in the nonprofit space or other community organizations, you tend to know a lot of other people who are also involved in that space. And so this class, and kind of getting my foot in the door with nonprofits in general, really showed me that there&#8217;s a really great intersection between Lexington and Transy and all of the opportunities that being in this city provides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An aspiring writer, Daley found Lexington\u2019s literary community especially energizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got to attend talks and meet people like Wendell Berry and Silas House, thanks to Lexington\u2019s communal writing events,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a small town in feel, but not in opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those opportunities \u2014 from internships to volunteer roles \u2014 gave Daley the experience she needed to build a successful communications career. She also credits her professors and mentors, with whom she remains in contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cScott and Kerri from the WRC department have been incredible mentors,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re always willing to offer advice. That connection hasn\u2019t faded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daley now returns to Transy as a guest speaker in the same Writing for\/with Nonprofits class that helped launch her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s surreal to be the one giving advice now,\u201d she said. \u201cI just hope I can inspire students the way those speakers once inspired me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For prospective students, Daley has this advice: \u201cYou can build a real future out of what you love.
