In 1963, Drewes became the first Black student to enroll at Transylvania, and then she went on to a notable career in the field of psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Inspired by the legacy of Dr. Lula Morton Drewes, the center serves as a dynamic hub where students of all backgrounds can connect, learn and thrive,&#8221; director Krissalyn Love said. &#8220;Through cultural programming, mentorship and community engagement, we strive to cultivate a strong sense of belonging and prepare students to navigate an increasingly diverse world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Love, the creation of this new center was made possible with the help of donors who wish to remain anonymous. It&#8217;s also meant to enhance student engagement in the classroom while supporting students and providing a space for their organizations, education and celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior artists M&#8217;Kiyah Baird, Chris Bryant and Morgan Hardigree were celebrated in the center April 23 with the opening of their \u201cReaching Higher\u201d exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"730\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/05\/transylvania_drewes_3-730x355.jpeg\" alt=\"three students posing for a photo at an art exhibition\" class=\"wp-image-25012\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/05\/transylvania_drewes_3-730x355.jpeg 730w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/05\/transylvania_drewes_3-350x170.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/05\/transylvania_drewes_3-768x374.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/05\/transylvania_drewes_3-810x394.jpeg 810w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/05\/transylvania_drewes_3-300x146.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/05\/transylvania_drewes_3.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Drewes spoke at the April 30 dedication. &#8220;I am very pleased and honored to join you in celebrating not just the opening of a center, but the acknowledgement of a bold truth and a promise: that all people matter, that all voices matter,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also during the center&#8217;s dedication, Dean Rebecca Thomas praised the honoree for her courage and determination, along with the positive impact she\u2019s had on her alma mater. &#8220;Dr. Drewes, thank you for all the good that your membership in the Transylvania community has done for us,&#8221; Thomas said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from Transylvania in 1967 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/2014\/05\/transylvania-recognizes-civil-rights-attorney-who-helped-integrate-the-university\/\">with the support of classmates<\/a>, Drewes earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University.
