Transylvania University has partnered with the city of Lexington and other schools in a weeklong celebration of local hoops history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two current Pioneer head basketball coaches, as well as retired Hall of Famer Don Lane, joined the University of Kentucky\u2019s Mark Pope and Kenny Brooks and others for Tuesday\u2019s announcement with Mayor Linda Gorton. Part of the city’s 250th anniversary celebration<\/a>, the featured Basketball Week games<\/a> tip off with Saturday’s doubleheader<\/a> in the Beck Center as the Pioneers take on Rose-Hulman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBasketball has always been more than just a game in Lexington \u2014 it\u2019s a cornerstone of our culture and community,” said Brian Lane, head coach of the Transylvania men’s basketball team. “For the mayor to declare Basketball Week in celebration of our city\u2019s 250-year history is an incredible tribute to the sport that has united generations. From the historic games at Rupp Arena, McAlister and the Beck Center, to the countless young players who\u2019ve honed their craft in local gyms, basketball is woven into the fabric of who we are. It\u2019s an honor to be part of a city where the love of the game runs so deep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hannah Varel, head coach of the Transylvania women’s program, which won the 2023 national championship<\/a>, also pointed out the city’s strong ties to the sport. “It’s a tradition, a source of pride and a bond that unites our community,” she said. “As a newcomer to Lexington, I quickly understood how deeply this sport connects the city. Celebrating Lexington\u2019s 250th year, Basketball Week is a time to reflect on the memories we’ve created and the spirit that keeps this city thriving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gorton noted how the 250th anniversary is a \u201ccelebration of all things Lexington, and what\u2019s more Lexington than basketball? We are excited to shine a light on those who have paved the way, establishing basketball as a tradition of excellence here in the Commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the city and Transylvania, other Basketball Week partners include 250Lex<\/a>, UK, Fayette County Public Schools and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
