Transylvania University’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program returns next month as accounting students get practical experience while serving their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in its 45th year, the school’s free tax prep runs each Monday \u2014 Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 \u2014 in the newly renovated Cowgill Center. Taxpayers making $62,000 or less can sign up for an appointment here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students, mostly juniors and seniors, work hard to get the biggest refund possible for participants. And professor Christi Hayne ’03 said she sees many clients return year after year for the popular e-filing program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One of Transy\u2019s values is giving to the community, so I think our students definitely appreciate this opportunity \u2014 to not just give back, but also get some credit,” Hayne said. Transylvania is the only school in Kentucky giving students credit for VITA. (They’re also ready to sit for the CPA exam right after graduation.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Problem-solving skills develop exponentially through this program, and being able to gain real life experience can help anybody in the accounting department,” said recent graduate Kaden Bates, who’s now an accountant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
