Transylvania University students will get another real-world look at the legal profession Jan. 22 when the Pre-Law Society hosts a session of the Kentucky Court of Appeals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting at 1 p.m, the public and campus community are invited to come out to Carrick Theater as a panel of judges hears oral arguments of these three cases<\/a> related to issues of involuntary commitment, health insurance and the corrections department. A Q&A will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTransylvania has been taking its already powerful pre-law program to the next level, and part of that supercharging has been our hosting actual sessions of the Kentucky Court of Appeals here,” said Peter Fosl, a philosophy professor and faculty adviser for the society. “Students won\u2019t find events quite like this anywhere else. It\u2019s this kind of thing that sets Transy apart from other colleges and universities \u2014 and we\u2019re proud of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court held a similar session<\/a> last winter term, and it comes on the heels of the society hosting a campus lecture by American Bar Association President Bill Bay<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawyers involved with the Jan. 22 cases have submitted briefs and will be making oral arguments and answering questions from the judges. Students from Lincoln County High School will also be attending the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judge Allison E. Jones, a 1997 alumna, will preside over the session with Susanne Cetrulo and Sara Combs as associate judges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fosl noted how the sessions were made possible by Jones and attorney Chanslor Gallenstein \u201916. “They exemplify the kind of supportive and engaged graduates characteristic of Transylvania.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
