Transylvania University is about to go into shutdown mode for more than a week to not only conserve energy but also give the school community a well deserved break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offices will be closed Dec. 23-Jan. 1 for the annual campus hibernation, which has saved the school over $1.5 million in utility bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For more than a decade, Transylvania has reaped the benefits of dialing back the heat and shutting off the lights during winter break,” said Lisa L. Custardo, executive vice president for business affairs and CFO. “The savings generated from these improved efficiencies are used to offset university costs in support of academics and other programs benefiting our Pioneers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offices will remain open a week after finals end Dec. 13. Before closing down, staff are asked to run through a checklist that includes tasks like making sure refrigerators are unplugged and thermostats are on their lowest setting (usually 55 degrees).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania won’t go totally dormant during this time. For instance, some students will remain on campus (and be able to control their thermostats). The Beck Center will also be open for games, including the women’s basketball Gratz Park Private Wealth Holiday Tournament<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
