LEXINGTON, Ky.\u2014 Transylvania University\u2019s professional theater residency project kicks off this week with four performances of the critically acclaimed\u00a0play, \u201cNo Spring\u00a0Chicken.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Project SEE production, directed by professor Sullivan Canaday White, will run Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in Little Theater.<\/p>\n

The new comedy by Ginna Hoben was hailed by critics at its Washington, D.C., premiere last fall as both a \u201ctale of life at its very existential core\u201d and \u201ca funny surprisingly raw show.\u201d<\/p>\n

The script is inspired by Hoben\u2019s pregnancy blog, \u201cbambino & the bean,\u201d which charted the highs and lows of pregnancy at an \u201cadvanced maternal age\u201d \u2013 40.\u00a0 \u201cWith candor typical of a late-night college gabfest,\u201d notes Washington Post reviewer Jane Horwitz, Hoben\u2019s character, Jenn, \u201claunches into her tale. She always wanted to be a mom but wasn\u2019t quite ready. And when she finally was ready, getting pregnant was tough.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a performance that celebrates the power of storytelling,\u201d\u00a0White said, \u201cmuch like Hoben\u2019s first play, \u2018The Twelve Dates of Christmas,\u2019 produced by Project SEE in 2011.\u201d\u00a0Project SEE is a Lexington theater company.<\/p>\n

Hoben is an actor, playwright\u00a0and TV writer\/producer who lives in New York City. (Her works include\u00a0the Emmy-nominated \u201cBrain Games.\u201d)<\/p>\n

With its launch with Hoben\u2019s play, Transylvania\u2019s professional theater residency program will provide students a chance to work alongside professional theater artists on stage and off.\u00a0 \u201cWhile professional theater residencies are not uncommon at large universities,\u201d White said, \u201cthis new program represents a rare partnership between a small liberal arts college and a professional theater company.\u201d The Project SEE residency is sponsored by Transylvania\u2019s Dixon\/White Theater Fund.<\/p>\n
