LEXINGTON, Ky.\u2014On Saturday, May 28, Transylvania University sent\u00a0270 students into the world\u2014Pioneers who are specially prepared to start their careers or continue their studies at graduate and professional schools.<\/p>\n
Lexington Mayor Jim Gray gave the\u00a0commencement address to the students. Gray\u2019s late mother, Lois Howard Gray, is a 1940 Transylvania graduate and was a member of the Board of Trustees for 22 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe welcome\u00a0Mayor Jim Gray to campus as an obvious choice for our commencement speaker,\u201d President Seamus Carey said. \u201cTransylvania is an integral part of Lexington, and the city\u2014with its plentiful internships and other opportunities\u2014complements our mission as a top-100 national liberal arts university.\u201d<\/p>\n
The class of 2016\u00a0received their degrees during the 9\u00a0a.m. ceremony in front of the\u00a0historic Old Morrison administration building.<\/p>\n
Fellow classmate Mary Katharine Stewart, who passed away March 19 in a hiking accident, was\u00a0awarded her Spanish degree posthumously.<\/p>\n
Senior Kevin Moore\u2014a religion major from Lexington\u2014gave\u00a0the student address.<\/p>\n
