Chris Begley<\/a>, a Transylvania University anthropology professor, has been selected to serve on a team of maritime archaeologists who will\u00a0explore the Fourni archipelago in Greece, where 22 shipwrecks<\/a> were found in a small area last year. This was touted as one of the top archaeological finds of 2015.<\/p>\n

The findings of the joint Greek-American archaeological\u00a0expedition bring to light ancient trade networks that once connected the entire Mediterranean.\u00a0Fourni, which is a collection of 13 islands and islets, lies along a major east-west crossing\u00a0route\u00a0as well as the primary north-south route that connected the Aegean to the Levant.<\/p>\n

Last\u00a0year’s initial work was the the first underwater archaeological expedition to the islands. The\u00a0project\u2019s success came through working with local sponge divers, fishermen\u00a0and free divers\u00a0together with technology and archaeological methods.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI am honored to be asked to be part of this important project,\u201d Begley said. \u201cI have worked\u00a0closely with RPM Nautical Foundation and project co-director Peter Campbell in Albania,\u00a0Montenegro\u00a0and Croatia, and I am excited to participate in this project, which relies not only on our\u00a0archaeological methods but also\u00a0on the extensive knowledge of the area that local residents\u00a0possess.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shipwrecks date from the Archaic Period (700-480 BC) though the Late Medieval Period\u00a0(16th century). The ships\u2019 cargos point to the importance of long-distance trade between the\u00a0Black Sea, Aegean Sea, Cyprus, the Levant\u00a0and Egypt. The discovery adds 12 percent\u00a0to the total number of known ancient shipwrecks in Greece. And the findings suggest a great quantity of the\u00a0shipwrecks await discovery in Fourni.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a typical survey we locate four or five shipwrecks per\u00a0season in the best cases,\u201d said\u00a0Greek archaeologist\u00a0George Koutsouflakis. \u201cWe expected a successful season, but no one\u00a0was prepared for this. Shipwrecks were found literally everywhere.\u201d For comparison, the\u00a0United States recently created a national marine sanctuary in Lake Michigan to protect 39\u00a0known shipwrecks located in 875 square miles. Fourni now has 22 known shipwreck in 17\u00a0square miles.<\/p>\n

The initial expedition was a collaboration between the Greek Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities\u00a0(EUA) and RPM Nautical Foundation (RPMNF), directed by Koutsouflakis (EUA)\u00a0and\u00a0Peter Campbell (RPMNF\/University of Southampton). Funding was provided by the Honor Frost\u00a0Foundation, a UK charity that supports research in the eastern Mediterranean through an\u00a0endowment from pioneer maritime archaeologist Honor Frost.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
