\nthe Origins of Species\u201d will be Sean B. Carroll\u2019s topic when he
\npresents Transylvania University\u2019s Kenan Lecture on Wednesday, October
\n28, at 7:30 p.m. in Haggin Auditorium in the Mitchell Fine Arts Center.
\nThe lecture is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

Carroll’s book Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origins of Species<\/em> was recently nominated for a National Book Award. The winners will be announced November 18.<\/p>\n

Carroll is professor of molecular biology and genetics at the
\nUniversity of Wisconsin, Madison and investigator with the Howard
\nHughes Medical Institute at the University of Wisconsin. His research
\nfocuses on the genes that control animal body patterns and play major
\nroles in the evolution of animal diversity. Discoveries from his
\nlaboratory have been featured in “TIME, US News & World Report, The New York Times, Discover,<\/em> and\u00a0 Natural History<\/em>. A 2009 NOVA special to mark the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin\u2019s birth and 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species<\/em> was based on Carroll\u2019s books, Endless Forms Most Beautiful\u00a0 and The Making of the Fittest<\/em>. He served as scientific consulting producer for the program.<\/p>\n

Carroll was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in
\n2009 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 2007. He received the
\nViktor Hamburger Outstanding Educator Prize from the Society of
\nDevelopmental Biology and is a Fellow of the American Association for
\nthe Advancement of Science. He received a B.A. degree in biology from
\nWashington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in immunology from Tufts
\nMedical School.<\/p>\n
