{"id":1745,"date":"2009-03-04T09:19:42","date_gmt":"2009-03-04T14:19:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/2009\/03\/tobacco-industry-critic-makes-case-for-federal-regulation-of-tobacco-products\/"},"modified":"2020-07-14T13:58:43","modified_gmt":"2020-07-14T17:58:43","slug":"tobacco-industry-critic-makes-case-for-federal-regulation-of-tobacco-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/2009\/03\/tobacco-industry-critic-makes-case-for-federal-regulation-of-tobacco-products\/","title":{"rendered":"Tobacco industry critic makes case for federal regulation of tobacco products"},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\" width=\"150\" class=\"imgBordersLeft\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/news\/images\/illustrations\/Wigand,-Jeffrey.jpg\" alt=\"Jeffrey Wigand\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Jeffrey Wigand\n\t\t\t<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>LEXINGTON, Ky.\u2014Tobacco industry critic Jeffrey Wigand, speaking at<br \/>\nTransylvania University on Tuesday, March 3, on the topic \u201cInsider\u2019s<br \/>\nView of the Tobacco Industry,\u201d made the case for federal regulation of<br \/>\ntobacco products while recounting his experiences as a former executive<br \/>\nat Brown &#038; Williamson Tobacco Corporation who went public with<br \/>\ninside information on that company\u2019s research and marketing practices.<\/p>\n<p>Wigand, vice president for research and development at Brown &#038;<br \/>\nWilliamson from 1988-93, decided to violate his confidentiality<br \/>\nagreement with his former employer in 1995 and reveal information on<br \/>\nthe company\u2019s research involving nicotine content and its effects on<br \/>\naddictiveness in smokers.<\/p>\n<p>He was subsequently the subject of a CBS <em>60 Minutes <\/em>expose and a 1999 Hollywood movie titled<em> The Insider <\/em>that<br \/>\ndepicted his story as a corporate whistler-blower and as a key witness<br \/>\nin a multi-state trial that resulted in Kentucky and 39 other states<br \/>\ngetting tobacco settlement money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal regulation should compel tobacco companies to disclose all the<br \/>\nadditives in their products,\u201d Wigand said. \u201cSmokers should have the<br \/>\nsame level of knowledge the industry itself has. I have no problem with<br \/>\nadult smokers who assume the risk, provided they do it with informed<br \/>\nconsent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wigand joined Brown &#038; Williamson with the goal of developing a less<br \/>\nhazardous cigarette and devising the testing protocol that would allow<br \/>\nthe company to make this claim in its advertising campaigns. He accused<br \/>\nthe company of thwarting this purpose and misrepresenting the facts of<br \/>\nhis research and findings.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Wigand came to believe that breaking his confidentiality<br \/>\nagreement about these matters after leaving the company was a moral<br \/>\nissue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a higher level of loyalty involved, and that was loyalty to<br \/>\nthe truth,\u201d he said. \u201cI followed my moral compass. I continue doing<br \/>\nwhat I believe is right, regardless of the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wigand now spends his time as an expert witness and consultant on<br \/>\ntobacco issues, giving lectures around the world, and supporting his<br \/>\nnon-profit organization, Smoke-Free Kids, Inc. He said he spends 182<br \/>\ndays a year talking with elementary and middle school students about<br \/>\nmaking good decisions regarding tobacco use.<\/p>\n<p>He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the School of Medicine and<br \/>\nBiomedical Sciences at the State University of New York Buffalo.
