\nLEXINGTON, Ky.\u2014Transylvania University’s student
\nnewspaper, The Rambler, was again a big winner in the Kentucky Intercollegiate
\nPress Association (KIPA) awards competition. Current and former staffers picked
\nup four first-place awards and several second- and third-place honors at the
\ngroup’s annual conference in Louisville this past weekend.<\/p>\n
\nThe yearly competition for two- and four-year campus
\nnewspapers features a variety of categories designed to showcase the talent of
\nstudent journalists throughout the state. The Rambler writers, photographers
\nand page designers competed in the division for schools with fewer than 5,000
\nstudents.\n<\/p>\n
\nAmong the top winners was sophomore Jake Hawkins, the
\npaper’s news editor. Hawkins won two first-place awards in news-one for his
\nstory on Kentucky’s texting while driving law and the other for his work with
\n2010 graduate Kim Rodgers covering the university’s search for a new president.\n<\/p>\n
\nNews judges Kevin Kelly and Brenna Kelly of the
\nCincinnati Enquirer had high praise for Hawkins and Rodgers in particular,
\nsaying they “did a great job of chronicling the school’s search for a new
\npresident. The paper covered the candidate forums with students, profiled each
\ncandidate, then interviewed the winner.”\u00a0 The judges commented that
\nHawkins and Rodgers were very thorough in their coverage.\n<\/p>\n
\nAlso bringing home a first-place award was photographer Ian
\nGerard in the feature photo category. His photo of Transy students marching in
\nthe Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Freedom March in Lexington last year was
\ndeemed “a nice moment from an annual event” by judges. The editorial staff, led
\nby senior Amanda Holt, also won first place for its editorial weighing
\ncandidates for university president. Judges said the editorial “is filled with
\nfacts, perspective and insight.”\n<\/p>\n
\nJunior John Johnson took first-place honors in the
\non-site copy editing test, besting students from both the large- and
\nsmall-school divisions. Other KIPA award winners included senior H.B. Elam and
\njuniors Erin Brock, Holly Brown and April York.\n<\/p>\n
\n“Every year, the students who work on The Rambler staff
\namaze me with their talents and their dedication. I’m so happy others are able
\nto see that as well,” said Terri McLean, student media adviser.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe Rambler, a student-run newspaper, is published weekly
