{"id":14792,"date":"2020-10-13T09:51:24","date_gmt":"2020-10-13T13:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/?p=14792"},"modified":"2020-11-12T16:01:19","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T21:01:19","slug":"recently-completed-legacy-trail-connects-transylvania-with-city-neighborhoods-countryside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/2020\/10\/recently-completed-legacy-trail-connects-transylvania-with-city-neighborhoods-countryside\/","title":{"rendered":"Recently completed Legacy Trail connects Transylvania with city neighborhoods, countryside"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/ribbon.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14794\" width=\"466\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/ribbon.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/ribbon-350x250.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/ribbon-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><figcaption>Ribbon cutting on the final section of the Legacy Trail \u2014 photo by Amy Wallot, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lexington officials last week celebrated the opening of the final section of the Legacy Trail \u2014 a mixed-use path stretching a total of 12 miles along a route that runs through Transylvania University along Fourth Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students use the trail in a variety of ways, from jaunting off to the countryside to conducting research for a Senior Seminar class to training for a cycle-centered May term travel course to the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And through the Transy Bikes program, students will be able to check out one of more than 30 bicycles from the new Campus Center to ride on the Legacy Trail, which runs from the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden at the corner of East Third Street and Midland Avenue to the Kentucky Horse Park north of town.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The path will soon connect to the Town Branch Commons Trail downtown, forming an uninterrupted 22 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/bike2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14798\" width=\"469\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/bike2-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/bike2-1-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/bike2-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><figcaption>Transylvania students on the Legacy Trail<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The fact the Legacy Trail now connects directly to our campus is a huge asset to the Transy community \u2014 and it&#8217;s easier than ever to use,&#8221; exercise science professor Sharon Brown said. &#8220;If you cycle in one direction, you can find yourself quickly out into our beautiful Bluegrass landscape (it&#8217;s 8 miles to the Kentucky Horse Park). Or if you walk or cycle in the opposite direction, you can connect with our community neighborhood and the center of town. The trail will make being physically active easier and more fun. Best of all, it&#8217;s beautiful and completely free.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final section that just opened is in the area of Third and Fourth streets near campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe this phase has had the most challenges, but I also believe this phase has the most opportunity to bring people together and build relationships, in addition to sharing the rich history of several downtown neighborhoods,\u201d said council member James Brown in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonky.gov\/news\/10-08-2020\/lexington-finishes-legacy-trail\">news release from the city<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/10\/IMG_5693-810x608.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14799\" width=\"387\" height=\"288\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Linda Gorton said, \u201cWe have a trail that thousands of local citizens enjoy, and an attraction that will bring in visitors from across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the Legacy has been voted one of Kentucky\u2019s favorite trails, Brown said.
