Lennon during a recent sabbatical. Dormancy plays a major role in the life of microbes; in one gram of soil we can find thousands of species of them\u2014and up to 90 percent are inactive.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTo help explore this factor in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiana.edu\/~microbes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">microbial diversity<\/a>, two Transylvania students will work in Lennon\u2019s lab each summer for five years beginning next year. Their work will be paid for by $50,000 of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.indiana.edu\/releases\/iu\/2014\/10\/lennon-biodiversity-grant.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">larger\u00a0grant<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/news\/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=132506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity Program<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDepending on their backgrounds and interests, these students could perform tasks such as molecular work; DNA sequencing; growing microbes in petri dishes; and computer modeling.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe project will give Transylvania students access to the equipment of a top research university; a chance to use these particular tools is rare opportunity for any undergraduate student.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd true to Transylvania\u2019s liberal arts emphasis on multidisciplinary study, not just biology majors are expected to participate.
