Also on the program for next month\u2019s series of free concerts is a mix of musical offerings\u2014from baroque to a hot-off-the-press world premiere.\u00a0 All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Mitchell Fine Arts Center\u2019s Carrick Theater and are open to the public.\n<\/p>\n

Chamber Orchestra \u201cBaroque and Back\u201d
<\/h4>\n

\nWednesday, April 2\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Transylvania University Chamber Orchestra will perform music from Handel to Ellington and will feature soprano Rebecca Keith and music faculty member Scott Heersche on trumpet. Keith, a junior and an applied voice major, won Transylvania\u2019s 2014 Concerto\/Aria Competition. The concert also will include selections by Durante, Poulenc and Stravinsky.\n<\/p>\n

Choral Concert<\/h4>\n

\nFriday, April 4\n<\/p>\n

\nThree choirs will raise the roof. Just back from a regional tour, the Transylvania University Choir will be led by student conductors Rebecca Keith, George Wu and Matthew Durr. The evening will focus on the Transylvania Singers, a women\u2019s chorus conducted by music instructor Joanna Manring; and Pioneer Voices, a men\u2019s chorus conducted by Gary Anderson.\n<\/p>\n

Jazz and Percussion Ensembles<\/h4>\n

\nTuesday, April 8\n<\/p>\n

\nThe jazz ensemble will heat up the stage with classic jazz and funk tunes. Under the direction of music faculty member Valerie Evans, students will perform standards such as \u201cSweet Georgia Brown\u201d (a.k.a. the Harlem Globetrotters theme) and \u201cWatermelon Man,\u201d which will be a chance for most jazz ensemble members to perform improvisational solos. Also, vocalist junior George Dao-Jung Wu will cut loose with \u201cDiggin\u2019 on James Brown\u201d and sophomore Heidi Clark will do Nat King Cole proud with her rendition of \u201cWhen I Fall in Love.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nThe percussion ensemble, under the direction of music faculty member Greg Strouse, will play four selections\u2014including the lively \u201cIrish Washwoman\u201d\u2014and feature soloist sophomore Max Smith on xylophone. Tyler Turcotte, a music and music technology major, will conduct \u201cClockwork,\u201d a piece he composed and will premiere at this performance.\n<\/p>\n

Opera Workshop<\/h4>\n

\nFriday, April 11\n<\/p>\n

\nVoice students will perform operatic scenes from Mozart\u2019s \u201cMagic Flute\u201d and \u201cLe Nozze di Figaro,\u201d Gilbert and Sullivan\u2019s \u201cPirates of Penzance,\u201d and musical theater favorites \u201cInto the Woods\u201d and \u201cA Little Night Music\u201d by Stephen Sondheim. Angela Eaton will accompany on piano. Joanna Manring and Kenan Visiting Artist in Music Gregory Turay prepared the scenes.\n<\/p>\n
