Don Quixote is dead. Now what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A newly published novel translated by Transylvania\nUniversity professor Veronica Dean-Thacker picks up where Miguel de Cervantes\nleft off in the early 1600s with the “Second Part of the Ingenious Knight\nDon Quixote of La Mancha.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Upon\nthe Death of Don Quixote<\/a>,” originally written in Spanish by renowned\nwriter Andr\u00e9s\nTrapiello<\/a>, imagines what happens after the demise of one of the most\nwell-known characters in all of literature \u2014 How does the family cope with Don\nQuixote’s passing? Is his hometown going to be turned into a shrine? What’s the\ndeal with his housekeeper being in love with him for years without anybody\nknowing about it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Trapiello really weaves this marvelous tale about all\nthat,” Dean-Thacker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juan de la Cuesta – Hispanic Monographs last month released\nThacker’s translation of Trapiello’s book, originally published in 2004 in time\nfor the 400th anniversary of Part 1 of Cervantes’ masterpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all started for the Spanish professor when she was visiting\nLe\u00f3n; Trapiello’s brother Pedro gave her a copy of “Upon the Death of Don\nQuixote” and said, “You really need to read this.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When I read it, I thought it’s too bad the\nEnglish-speaking world doesn’t have access to this story,” Dean-Thacker\nsaid. “I was almost sickened at the end when I thought all my family and\nfriends are never going to be able to read this \u2014 unless I do something.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trapiello was inspired to continue Cervantes’ story because the\nother characters were sort of “left in the dust\u201d with the protagonist\u2019s\ndeath, she said. “There are so many lessons from Don Quixote’s life that\nare reflected in these characters.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for Cervantes’ original, Dean-Thacker called it “such\na compelling novel, and so much of literature that has been written since\nreflects what’s in that story in one way or another.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dean-Thacker<\/a>\nis translating another Trapiello novel, a sequel to “Upon the Death of Don\nQuixote” titled “The Adventures of Sancho Panza.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
