Five years ago, Lyndsay Whitlock \u201915 said her first real\ngoodbye to her twin sister and set out for New York City to pursue a clinical doctorate\nin physical therapy at Columbia University. It would be her greatest adventure\nto date, something she says her 18-year-old self never would have imagined\ndoing.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure if I ever would have had the guts to apply to Columbia if I hadn\u2019t gone to Transy,\u201d Whitlock reflects. \u201cI think they gave me the confidence to know that I could dream of going to any school that I wanted without fear of failure. It was more like hope and encouragement that I could do it.\u201d She also had the academic foundation to hit the ground running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTransy definitely prepared me for Columbia,\u201d she says. The\nonly question was whether she had chosen the field that was right for her. Exercise\nscience offers many options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hodgenville, Kentucky, native thrived in New York, growing as an individual, enjoying the unpredictable nature of living in the city and the privilege of working with faculty, clinicians and peers from across the country. \u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s beautiful about New York,\u201d she notes, \u201cit\u2019s that people come from everywhere.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She learned from the research expertise of those around her and\nfrom participating in four clinical rotations, including one in Washington state\nthat focused on neuro-related issues such as strokes and amputations. In her\nthird year, she took seminars specializing in pediatrics.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was an intense program, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d she\nacknowledges. The combined experience \u201chelped me tremendously to know what the\nbest course of treatment is for a variety of conditions.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her first job in a boutique practice on the Upper West Side clarified\nher love for the discipline and her realization that, after four years in New\nYork, she was ready to bring her bounty of experience home to Kentucky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whitlock, a licensed physical therapist, now practices in Winchester, Kentucky, where she relishes her colleagues and the complete range of people she gets to help every day. Her approach to them and to the long, busy days suggests she has embraced a vocation rather than a job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never feel like I\u2019m coming to work,\u201d she admits. \u201cI\nreally love what I do.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whitlock especially values the connection she has with patients whom she sees two to three times a week, in contrast to many physicians who see a patient only sporadically. She calls the consistent interaction invaluable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI come to work and try to live deliberately and know that\nI\u2019m not just coming to work for an 8 a.m. patient,\u201d she explains, \u201cbut that the\npatient has a name; they have something they\u2019d like to get back to doing. I\nneed to show up at 8 a.m. to help them do that, to reach that goal.\u201d She adds,\n\u201cI\u2019m very lucky to enjoy it so much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s also pleased to be back \u201chome\u201d in Lexington, reunited with\nher twin, Valerie Whitlock \u201915, who is in her second year of law school at the\nUniversity of Kentucky, and with her many Transy friends who provided support\nfrom afar when she lived in New York. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She recognizes the lasting impact of her time at Transy. \u201cI think that not only did it give me confidence, but also friendships I will have forever,\u201d she says of her peers and professors who not only made her future possible, but who can always be counted on. She\u2019s looking forward to renewing connections at her five-year class reunion during Transy\u2019s Alumni Weekend<\/a> from April 24-26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked what it means to have Columbia University on her\nresume, she shifts the answer to focus on the value of the experience. \u201cPeople\nknow the name of the school,\u201d she says, \u201cbut for me it\u2019s more that I feel like\nI received one of the best educations there is in the field.\u201d She takes to\nheart the responsibility that comes with such a privilege. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know others may not have that same opportunity, so I just\nwant to do the best I can to make sure I\u2019m living up to that. At the end of the\nday, I\u2019m very lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
