They met in a calculus class in their first year. He pretended to need her help. (He was very good at calculus.)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although Jared Brewington \u201916 and Eden Yeiser \u201916 met \u201cunofficially\u201d on move-in day, when he and a friend spontaneously helped her move some furniture up to her room, they consider their \u201cofficial\u201d meeting as the first day of calculus during their first semester at Transy. Eden remembers Jared arriving late and taking a seat nearby. They became friends from there. Soon Jared was feigning the need for Eden\u2019s help with homework, even though, as he later admitted, he was a lot better at math. At the end of the term, Eden notes, \u201cHe got an A in calculus. I did not.\u201d When, over the winter break, he texted that he was thinking about dating someone else, she texted back: \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think so. I think we<\/em> are going to date.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Valentine\u2019s Day, as we celebrate all of our #PioneerPairs, Jared and Eden Yeiser Brewington share what it has meant to build their personal and academic lives on a strong Transylvania foundation. Jared is pursuing a Ph.D. in physics, and Eden, a doctorate in pharmacy \u2014 both at the University of Kentucky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing\nwith a fellow Pioneer is interesting,\u201d Jared explains. \u201cOn the one hand we\ndeveloped similar values at our time at Transy. This similarity helped us grow\ncloser in all our years together. At the same time, a Transy education inspires\nyou to consider someone else\u2019s view point and to celebrate diversity. I think\nthis side of our education has helped us mature as a couple, really working to\nunderstand and respect each other\u2019s perspective.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh my gosh that\u2019s a\ngreat answer,\u201d Eden interjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jared, who was pre-med when he arrived at Transy, found himself unexpectedly assigned to a physics course in that same first semester. He loved it. He was drawn to the problem solving. With the helpful push and example of professor Jamie Day he committed to the several grueling years of grad school. He\u2019s now deep into nuclear physics, researching and designing a coil that will provide a uniform magnetic field for an experiment in Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. He\u2019ll be moving there in April to finish his Ph.D. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jared is pursuing a Ph.D. in physics and Eden a Pharm.D. at the University of Kentucky. They came to Transy for an education and left with their soul mate. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Eden says she was always interested in something healthcare related. She decided to major in biochemistry because she liked the science of the breakdown mechanisms. And because, she adds, \u201cthe chemistry faculty are amazing.\u201d She remembers Transy\u2019s \u201cawesome atmosphere of always feeling like you were supported to learn and grow in your own path, with professors there to answer any questions.\u201d This extended to a sense of nurturing camaraderie outside the classroom, too. So many times she sat with professor Rosenberg, \u201cchit-chatting about life and things,\u201d she reminisces. \u201cIt\u2019s a good support system.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she works toward a Pharm.D. at the University of Kentucky, she\u2019s anticipating residencies and specializations that will put her in the demanding environment of intensive care, rounding with the medical team, choosing the best medications for the patient. She also may select neurocritical care or trauma. She, too, is a problem solver. \u201cThat\u2019s what I really enjoy,\u201d she admits. \u201cI like coming in and seeing all these crazy problems, prioritizing what\u2019s important and working my way through the process.\u201d The dynamic, demanding world in which patients code or seize in the middle of rounds compels her. \u201cYou have to react and determine what you need to be doing in that moment.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Eden\nand Jared have found themselves highly prepared to excel in their fields of\nstudy. \u201cTransy\u2019s liberal arts curriculum teaches you how to learn,\u201d Jared says,\n\u201cwhich is the most important skill I could have.\u201d Even in cases when the people\naround him have been ahead of his skills at the beginning of an assignment or\nproject, he says, \u201cI am able to pick up things quickly and catch up on or even\nsurpass others because I have a solid foundation of learning to build upon.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eden echoes how the curriculum \u201cgives you those fundamental skills of analyzing a problem and finding the path you need to take and then build up your own.\u201d She acknowledges the dual facets of development, from taking classes, like history, that pushed her into less familiar, non-STEM territory to the rigor of the science curriculum. She acknowledges how it has paid off. \u201cEspecially for pharmacy,\u201d she says, \u201cTransy really prepared me.\u201d In her first year of graduate school she found that she already knew most of the content (from her biochemistry major and other classes). As the content grew more difficult, she realized that by having put in the time at Transy she understood the basics of what was happening in each class. \u201cSo Transy definitely prepared me to be at the top of the class for that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jared\nemphasizes as well that \u201cTransy science courses aren\u2019t necessarily all about\nmaterial; it\u2019s about being presented with a novel problem and using the skills\nyou\u2019ve been taught to find a solution.\u201d This has helped him succeed in his\ncourses and research at UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the\nalumni pair are asked what they would share with prospective Pioneers who are\nthinking about their future college experience, Jared offers: \u201cYour four years\nat Transy aren\u2019t just about the paper that you get on the last day, it\u2019s about\nbuilding the best possible you. There will be growing pains, but all the hard\nwork and long nights are worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eden\npauses as if scoping out the decades ahead. \u201cI just really enjoyed my Transy\nexperience,\u201d she says. \u201cWe met people who will be with us the rest of our\nlives, as well as feeling prepared to go out and about on our own. I think\nTransy really prepared us for that. Those really are the best four years of\nyour life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
