What colleges mean when they say ‘holistic admissions’ and how Transy actually practices it

If you’re applying to college this fall, you’ve probably seen the phrase “holistic admissions.” But what does it actually mean, and how do schools like Transylvania University put it into practice?

Holistic admissions is more than an evaluation method. It’s a philosophy that considers the whole student, not just grades or test scores. It looks at potential, context and character, the traits that often define future success far more than numbers alone.

At Transy, holistic admissions isn’t just a promise. It’s how every decision is made.

What ‘holistic’ really means

A holistic review considers every element of your application: your academic performance, your activities, your essay and your recommendations — all within the context of your opportunities and environment.

“Holistic review means we take time to really understand the student behind the transcript,” said Julie Sams, director of admissions at Transylvania. “We look at where a student has been, what they’ve accomplished and how they’ve grown, because success in college is about momentum, not perfection.”

This comprehensive approach helps ensure fairness for every applicant, regardless of background, access or circumstance.

How Transy practices holistic review

Each Transy application is reviewed by multiple admissions professionals who evaluate both academic preparation and personal strengths.

Here’s what the team considers:

  • Academic readiness: The rigor of your courses, your grade trends and your approach to learning.
  • Engagement: Your involvement in your school or community and how you contribute to others.
  • Character and curiosity: Reflected through your essay, recommendations and authentic interests.
  • Fit: How Transy’s programs, community and liberal arts model align with your goals.

“We read applications with an open mind,” said Erin Craig, senior vice president for enrollment management. “We’re not just looking for numbers that stand out — we’re looking for people who bring curiosity, empathy and a desire to be part of something bigger.”

A test-optional, not test-blind, approach

Transylvania University is proudly test-optional, which means students can choose whether to include ACT or SAT scores as part of their application.

If you believe your scores strengthen your application, you can submit them, and they’ll be reviewed as one part of the holistic process. If you choose not to, your application will still receive full consideration for both admission and scholarships.

“We view test scores as one piece of a much larger picture,” Sams said. “For many students, their story — their determination, creativity, leadership — speaks even louder.”

This flexible policy allows students to present themselves authentically and focus on the aspects of their application that best highlight their strengths.

Why it matters

For many students, holistic admissions can be a game changer. It means that qualities like persistence, initiative and community impact carry real weight in the review process.

At Transy, that commitment helps ensure every student is evaluated in a way that’s personal, inclusive and fair — one that values the whole person and the promise they bring to campus.

“We know that every student’s journey is different,” Craig said. “Our job is to see potential in those differences — to find the spark that tells us a student will thrive here.”

Personal, transparent and fair

As one of the nation’s oldest liberal arts universities, Transylvania combines centuries of academic tradition with a forward-thinking approach to college access. The admissions team uses consistent, mission-based criteria — emphasizing equity, integrity and individual attention in every review.

That combination of experience, structure and empathy is what defines Transy’s process — and why students can trust it.

“Holistic review takes time,” Sams said. “But it’s time well spent when you see students find their place and succeed here.”
