Transylvania University President Brien Lewis has announced plans to conclude his tenure as president in summer 2027 following one additional year of service. The university’s Board of Trustees voted today to extend Lewis’ leadership through the 2026-27 academic year. A national presidential search will begin in the coming months.
Lewis, who has led Transylvania for the past six years, shared the news with the campus community, expressing pride in the university’s progress and confidence in its future.
“There are many positive things happening at Transylvania, and I am deeply encouraged by the progress we have made together,” Lewis said. “I am especially proud of our leadership team. In my 26 years in higher education, it may be the strongest team with which I have had the privilege to serve. Their shared commitment to our mission continues to position the university well for the future.”
Chair Chris Young and the Board of Trustees expressed support and gratitude for Lewis’ leadership and agreed on a transition timeline designed to ensure continuity and stability. Lewis will remain fully engaged as president during the next academic year, supporting strategic priorities and maintaining the university’s momentum while the search for his successor is conducted.
“President Lewis has led Transylvania with integrity and a clear commitment to our students and mission,” Young said. “We are grateful for his continued service through the 2026-27 academic year and are confident that this thoughtful transition will position the university for continued success as we begin a national search for our next leader.”
Additional details about the presidential search process and next steps will be finalized in the coming months and shared with the campus community.
“As we move through this transition, I am confident in our collective strength and in our shared commitment to supporting our students and advancing the important work we do each day to sustain and grow Transylvania’s impact,” Lewis said. “It continues to be a privilege to serve alongside this remarkable community.”
