Transylvania University invites the local community to campus Thursday, July 3, for this year’s Patriotic Concert featuring the Lexington Philharmonic.

The 42nd annual show kicks off at 5 p.m. on Old Morrison Lawn with the Young At Heart Big Band, and the LexPhil performs at 7:30. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and grab dinner from one of the food trucks — or pack a picnic.

The family-friendly concert is part of the city’s Fourth of July celebration, which includes a variety of events from July 1-5, including an ice cream social, Bluegrass 10,000 and Fun Run, public reading of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and fireworks show.

Each year, the Patriotic Concert draws a crowd from the top of Old Morrison Circle into Gratz Park, where residents deck out their homes and fences with flags and bunting.

Other performers besides the Lexington Philharmonic have included the Kentucky National Guard’s 202nd U.S. Army Band, Lexington Singers and various soloists.
