Transylvania Juried Student Art Exhibition to open May 4

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University’s annual Juried Student Art Exhibition will showcase standout student artworks in a variety of media—from fiber to digital—in Morlan Gallery from May 4-18. An unprecedented number of students submitted works for the first round of jurying by the art faculty and gallery director. Prizes will be awarded in “best of” categories during the second stage of jurying in the first week of May. Specific honors include the Dean’s Purchase Award, which recognizes superior student artists by creating a permanent collection of works for the university. Laura Bryan, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the university, will continue this tradition. Another recognition, the Nana Lampton Prize, is given to a senior for creative vision, strong work ethic and natural leadership. The award was named in honor of Nana Lampton, who is a visual artist, poet, philanthropist and business leader. For first time, an Abbott Scholarship will be presented during the Juried Student Art Exhibition. This annual award will be given to a rising junior or senior who demonstrates studio and scholarly excellence. The scholarship was established in memory of Mildred and Harold Abbott, both patrons and practitioners in the visual and performing arts. The student exhibition will open Friday, May 4, with a reception from 5-7 p.m. and an awards presentation at 6. The final evening for the exhibition will be Friday, May 18, during the LexArts Gallery HOP. Morlan Gallery, located on the main level of Transylvania’s

Transylvania partners with UK on pre-med, pre-pharmacy programs

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University has launched two partnerships with the University of Kentucky that give students an inside track to graduate school at the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus. Transylvania’s Early Assurance Program partnership with the University of Kentucky College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus reserves spots for Transylvania pre-med students at the new northern Kentucky campus. Up to three students will receive assured admission to the College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus upon graduation from Transylvania (pending completion of all requirements). Candidates will apply with and be selected by a Transylvania committee for review by the UK College of Medicine. One Transy student has already been accepted to the Northern Kentucky campus through the partnership. The Early Assurance Program will also grant students enrichment experiences while at Transylvania. Activities include exposure to hospital and office practice; shadowing and mentoring experiences with physicians; academic advising at Transy; targeted research, seminar and course experiences; MCAT preparation; and a one-week boot camp in northern Kentucky. “These are incredible opportunities for our students to receive Transylvania’s top-ranked liberal arts experience, coupled with a direct pathway to graduate education in medicine and pharmacy,” said Vice President and Dean of the University Laura Bryan. “They will enjoy the benefits of one-on-one interactions with faculty and personal attention at Transy along with the resources of a research-intensive University of Kentucky.” Transylvania’s pre-med graduates have historically shown great success—approximately 90 percent of students Transy has

Transylvania student, recent grad win Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships

LEXINGTON, Ky.—A Transylvania University student and a recent graduate have received prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships for 2018-19. Fulbright grants are highly competitive, and recipients are chosen for their academic and leadership potential. Senior Hannah Weber, of Alexandria, Ky., will teach through the Fulbright program in Malaysia. The neuroscience and educational studies double major will be the fourth ETA from Transylvania to teach in that country. Jamie Vescio, who graduated last May, was one of only 10 applicants across the country to receive this year’s Fulbright ETA for France. Vescio, who studied in Tanzania with the assistance of a Gilman scholarship, plans to receive her master’s degree in education from Vanderbilt this June. She is a graduate of Lafayette High School in Lexington. The Fulbright U. S. Student program, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, was established in 1946 by legislation introduced by Sen. J. William Fulbright. It increases mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries. (Photo: Hannah Weber, left, and Jamie Vescio)
