Letter to parents, fall 2012
Dear Transylvania Parents:
You have every reason to be proud of being a Transylvania parent. This fall, we welcomed one of the largest and most academically talented entering classes we have ever seen, and they brought lots of energy and enthusiasm to the campus. Classes are well underway, student organizations and activities have come to life, and our student-athletes are showing us once again that a small college can do big things on the playing field. Everywhere you look, the feeling of renewal that comes with another school year is upon us.
Here are a few examples of the exciting things happening on campus right now. Our opening academic convocation featured National Book Award-winning poet Nikky Finney, and our fall Kenan Lecture presenter was Marion Nestle, a nationally recognized expert on nutrition. Transylvania Theater raises the curtain this weekend with a production of The Liar
. Our second annual Pumpkin Mania, featuring hundreds of carved pumpkins on the steps of Old Morrison, is becoming a new tradition at Transylvania and in the Lexington community. Morlan Gallery is hosting "Ink in the Cage: The Stories Behind MMA Fighter Tattoos," created by two Transylvanians—anthropology professor Barbara LoMonaco and alumna Angela Baldridge '04. In sports, our men's and women's soccer teams and our women's volleyball team are in the thick of conference races, and our men's basketball team takes on the University of Kentucky Wildcats in an exhibition game at Rupp Arena on Monday, November 5.
If you were here for Family Weekend, you experienced firsthand the liveliness of our campus. Planning is underway to make next year's event more fun than ever. But don't wait until then to visit—you are always welcome, and we hope you'll join us as often as you can for many upcoming events
The new year at any college means the discovery of new possibilities, for learning, for understanding, for growing into the full and complete person we are capable of becoming. It is my sincere wish that all of our students, whatever stage they occupy in their college journey, find this academic year to be a time of great possibilities becoming manifest, of potential being realized, of deep satisfaction in the pure joy of learning.
Thank you for believing in us at Transylvania. We are proud to have your sons and daughters among our community of scholars.
