Graduation Information

Filing for graduation?

All students must file an Application for Graduation online via TNet (under Academic Profile). Graduation applications are due by November 1.

The student’s name and hometown will appear on the diploma and in the commencement program exactly as the student enters the information in the Application for Graduation. It’s important to verify the accuracy of what is typed.

An Application for Graduation can be submitted only once via TNet. If changes are needed, please contact the registrar’s office.

What is the deadline to file an Application for Graduation?

November 1.

Which graduation term should be selected when filing an Application for Graduation?

The student should select the term when degree requirements will be completed. Students may finish degree requirements in May, August, or December, but there is only one commencement each year, held on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in May.

Can students participate in commencement if they will not graduate until the following August or December?

If students are scheduled to complete degree requirements by the following August or December and completes the Application for Graduation by November 1, they may participate in commencement. December graduates can elect to walk the May before or the May after they complete all requirements.

How will I know that I have graduated?

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all graduation requirements have been met, but the registrar’s office will make every effort to contact you before commencement if you have requirements outstanding. A student’s progress (on self-service//student planning) will reflect all requirements are completed.

What GPA is required to graduate with honors?

Summa Cum Laude3.900 – 4.000
Magna Cum Laude3.700 – 3.899
Cum Laude3.500 – 3.699

What type of degree will a student receive?

A Bachelor of Arts degree.

Where is commencement held?

Commencement takes place on the lawn in front of Old Morrison. In the case of rain, commencement is held in the Beck Center

How and when will students receive their diploma?

If completing degree requirements in May, students will receive their diploma at the commencement ceremony when crossing the stage. If students are completing degree requirements in August or December, the registrar’s office will contact them when their diploma is available. Students can elect to pick it up in the office or have it mailed. Diplomas cannot be mailed to a PO Box, because they cannot be bent.

How does a student’s name appear on a diploma?

Students are given the opportunity to indicate the name they want printed on their diploma via their graduation application. Preferred names and nicknames are permitted as diplomas are ceremonial and not legal documents. 

If a student’s name has special characters such as an acute accent (é, á), a tilde (ã, ũ), or an umlaut (ë, ö) that are not reflected in the database, please contact the registrar’s office.

Do Latin or program honors appear on diplomas?

Yes, Latin honors are listed on diplomas. Honors are as follows:

Summa Cum Laude3.900 – 4.000
Magna Cum Laude3.700 – 3.899
Cum Laude3.500 – 3.699

Do majors or minors appear on diplomas?

No. Majors and minors appear on the official transcript.

What are the diploma dimensions?

Diplomas are 8 ½ x 11 inches. Frames are available in the Transylvania University Bookstore.

If the diploma is lost, can I get a new one?

Yes. Complete the duplicate/replacement diploma request form and the $50 fee. The form may be mailed with a check to:

Diploma re-orders take 4 to 6 weeks as diplomas are hand-signed by the President of Transylvania University and the Chair of the Board of Trustees.
