All courses beyond the 1000 level should be chosen in careful consultation with an English program adviser. *For students wishing to develop an overview of literature from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, it is strongly recommended that they satisfy the above major pattern by including the following cluster: ENG 2474 (Survey of British Literature I), to be taken in the sophomore year, and at least two 3000-level period courses from the "pre-eighteenth-century" list. Students aiming for graduate study should acquire a reading knowledge of one foreign language, some acquaintatnce with its literature, and at least some knowledge of a second foreign language.
