"Lies My Teacher Told Me"
A Presentation By
Dr. James W. Loewen
Ph.D. in Sociology, Harvard University
October 9, 2001
James Loewen spent two years at the Smithsonian Institute
surveying the twelve leading high school text books on
American history. He found an embarassing blend of bland
optimism, blind nationalism, and plain misinformation.
In response, he wrote Lies
My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History
Textbook Got Wrong, in part a scathing critique of
existing textbooks, but also a gripping retelling of American
history as it should - and could - be taught.
Lies My Teacher Told Me
won the American Book Award, the Oliver C. Cox Award for
Anti-Racist Scholarship, and the Critics Choice Award from
the American Educational Studies Association.
James Loewen taught race
relations for twenty years at the University of Vermont.
Previously he taught for eight years at a predominantly
African American Tougaloo College, and Mississippi State
University.
