"The Struggle for Justice in Latin America"
A talk by
Father Roy Bourgeois
Co-Founder, School of the Americas Watch
September 20, 2001
Maryknoll Catholic priest, Vietnam veteran, recipient of the Purple
Heart and former missionary in Bolivia, Bourgeois has been determined to
close the school since the mid-1980's when he first learned of the U.S.
Army's link to the violence in Latin America. The SOA is a program that
trains hundreds of soldiers from Latin America in combat skills - all
paid for by U.S. taxpayers. He co-founded SOA Watch in 1990 and, when
not in federal prison for his part in protest actions, has lived in a
small apartment just outside the main gate at Fort Benning. The SOA
Watch office in Washington, D.C. informs the general public, Congress
and the media about the implications of this training on the poor of
Latin America. Last November, 17-19, an estimated 10,00 protested the
SOA at the main gate of Ft. Benning. Many have been arrested over the
years and some have spent time in prison.
Bourgeois' visit to Transylvania is
sponsored by the Social Sciences Division, the Humanities Division, the
Lilly Foundation, Progress, the Office of Community Service, Student
Activities, Residence Life and the Transylvania Catholic Association.
