Transylvania Receives $1.5 Million Lilly Endowment Grant

October 30, 2000

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University has received a $1.5 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to support programs for the “Theological Exploration of Vocation.” The project will include collaborative programs involving six areas of campus life: academics, career development, the chaplain’s office, community service, student life and alumni relations.

Paul H. Jones, professor of religion and dean of the chapel said, “Our goal is to create a campus ethos that encourages students to understand their future work in light of their faith commitments, expand and enrich the preministerial program and strengthen partnerships with seminaries and other church-related organizations.”

President Charles L. Shearer said, “This is the largest foundation grant Transylvania has ever received, and it will enhance and expand our existing liberal arts curriculum. We are extremely grateful to Lilly Endowment.”

Transylvania is one of 20 schools nationwide--and the only Disciples of Christ college--to receive a $1 million-plus Lilly Endowment grant. Totaling $39.7 million, the 20 grants were selected from 31 schools that were awarded planning grants in May 1999.

Craig Dykstra, vice president for religion at the Indianapolis-based foundation, said: “The caliber of proposals that we received in this initiative was absolutely outstanding. It is clear that these schools have thought deeply and productively about this issue of encouraging young people to consider questions of faith and commitment when they choose their careers.”

Founded in 1937, the Endowment is an Indianapolis-based private family foundation that supports its founders’ wishes by supporting the causes of religion, community development and education.
