Distinguished Service Awards 2007

Five alumni received Distinguished Service Awards during Alumni Weekend 2007 for outstanding service to Transylvania

 Ann Horton Burns Ann Wallace Horton Burns ’42 had a close relationship with students during the years (1962-80) that her husband, the late Ben Burns ’41, was a Transylvania professor and dean. She fed and entertained students in their home and traveled abroad with them and her husband, and continues to support the Ben Burns Scholarship Fund. She served on the Alumni Executive Board from 1992-95, is a former president of the Robert Barr Society, and is a member of the Transylvania Women’s Club and the James Morrison Society.
 John Compton John Morgan Compton ’62 has been a driving force within his class, serving on reunion committees in 1997, 2002, and 2007. He twice hosted his classmates for special reunion gatherings and dinners at Gloryland Farm. He is a member of the Bluegrass Area Alumni Chapter and the Pioneer Alumni Recruitment Team, and served on the Alumni Executive Board from 1969-72.
 Jack Ebel Jack D. Ebel ’77 just marked his first anniversary as director of athletics at Transylvania and his 29th year of service to his alma mater. He started Transy’s swimming and diving program in 1977 and was head coach until 2006. He also coached men’s and women’s tennis from 1979-2000 and was assistant director of the William T. Young Campus Center from 1983-2006. For many years he directed Transy’s swim lesson program and All Sports Camp. He was a member of his class’s reunion committee in 2002 and co-chair this year. He has hosted alumni swim meets and events that honor alumni athletes
 Fred Peters Fred E. Peters ’77 has served on the Board of Visitors since 1999 and is a former member of the Alumni Executive Board. He served on the 1997 and 2007 reunion committees for his class and hosted his classmates at his home for a 30th reunion gathering this year. A member of the Bluegrass Area Alumni Chapter, he has provided financial and fund-raising support for the new tennis complex.
 Dorothy Smith
Dorothy Joan Steinbeck Smith ’42 recently established the Dorothy J. and Fred K. Smith Endowed Concert Series, an annual program that will provide the campus community with top-quality musical entertainment from many diverse genres, and the Sharon Sue Smith Memorial Scholarship. Her late husband, Fred K. Smith, was a member of the class of 1940. She is a member of the Robert Barr Society and the James Morrison Society and assisted with her 50th class reunion.
