2013 Induction Ceremony

On August 10, 2013, first-year students gathered in Haggin Auditorium for their official welcome to the Transylvania community. Audio and transcripts of the remarks presented by each of the speakers are available below.

Michael Covert

Michael Covert, associate vice president for retention and associate dean of students
Covert earned a B.A. in psychology from Transylvania, an M.S. in college student personnel administration from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in educational policy studies and evaluation from the University of Kentucky. Before coming to Transylvania in 1996, he held student life positions at Washington University in Saint Louis and Indiana University. He currently serves as the administrative director for August term.

R. Owen Williams

R. Owen Williams, president
Williams earned an A.B. degree in philosophy from Dartmouth College in 1974, then studied at Cambridge University in England, earning an M.A. in intellectual history in 1976. He had a two-decade plus career on Wall Street that took him from Salomon Brothers in New York City to Goldman-Sachs in Hong Kong. In 1999 Williams left the business world to pursue an academic career. He completed a Ph.D. in American history at Yale University and an M.S. in Law at Yale Law School before coming to Transylvania in 2010.

April Ballard

A senior Spanish and biology double major from Bardstown, Ky., Ballard has participated in student government for three years, having served as technology liaison, secretary, and now president.

Martha Billips

Martha Billips, English professor and associate dean of the college for first-year academic programs and advising
Billips holds a B.A. from Transylvania University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. She has been a professor at Transylvania since 1997 and became an associate dean of the college in 2012. As associate dean, Billips strives to clearly establish the expectations of a liberal arts curriculum and help first-year students develop the skills necessary to navigate their myriad responsibilities.
