Studio Art

The studio art degree program at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, introduces students to the fundamentals through courses in drawing, design, painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and art history.

Art majors select an area of specialization in one of the studio disciplines. The major culminates in a capstone course in which seniors learn to craft a portfolio and, under the personal guidance of a professor, make a final, original body of artwork.

The Shearer Art Building, named for Transylvania’s former president, provides an abundance of natural light and includes numerous specialty spaces for such functions as canvas frame and stretcher building, plaster and clay mixing for sculpture and ceramics, and light and backdrop staging for photography. Glaze and raku kilns for firing ceramic work are located outdoors adjacent to the building.

Faculty studios near the classrooms create an easy transition from theory to application and provide students with access to their instructors in a productive, professional context. Art faculty members maintain an active, high profile in regional and national arenas and openly share these experiences with students.
